Weird that it's showing that for you - its normal price is $4.99 US.
And Hearthfrire's okay. Fairly easy to get bored of the houses, though. After your first couple of experiences with them, odds are you'll stick with just making a Small House (for the exterior amenities of a garden, chicken nest, fish hatchery or bee hive, carriage, and stable) and maybe a Main Hall (so you don't have to travel for Alchemy & Enchanting) at each location. Other than saving a loading screen when you want a place to store stuff (exterior, non-respawning chest) or to craft (especially Smithing, since you can build all the stations outdoors), there's not much to them other than flavor.
Kids can be annoying, but if you're an Alchemist, they tend to drop a fair number of good ingredients in their chest, so it's worth having one around. :P
Chaith - Marriage is in the base game.
I find your notion wierd, as greenhouse is a definant build if you don't plan on using the house just for the free alchemy ingredients you can grow.
Plus I'd say everybody could probably use 1 kitchen and 1 library.
Skyrim may be better at the run away economy than the others, but giving the kiddies stuff does help a little, personally I rarely give them less than the full 1,000 since I already have over 100k in a safe and my spending gold is over 100k, would be more but I had to pay off my crime bill in Morthal to continue the civil war.
a) you can't train your adopted children in the arts of war and then give them badass armor (you CAN give them weapons, though. It's kind of funny watching the kids run around with Daderic artefacts) and then have them with you for the final battle.
b) I can't buy armor for my horse.
