where can I store stuff?
Can I just drop things anywhere or will it get taken? Can I put them in empty chests anywhere?

Dropping items anywhere they may disappear. Some wandering Minstrel picks them up. If you put them in just any old chest the items may disappear if the chest is repopulating. Most chests in Dungeons, quest areas etc are like this. But if you own a home, bought through the game, a DLC or a mod the chests in these locations should keep your items safe and they are bottomless.

Storing items in containers you don't own will cause them to disappear over time. You'll want to store them in houses you own.

You have to buy the player homes in game. There are mod's in the workshop and on Nexus Mod's that you can load to have a free player home. Bewarned when you buy your player home in game you will also have to spend more gold to furnish it to look like a nice home. There are also codes that you can use with the tilde key to add gold or other items if you so wish but that can take the fun out of the game. I use it to buy my Breeze Home and furnish it but after that I don't use the code anymore.

Breezehome is cheap compared with some of the other homes. Just buy the home if you do not have enough to get certain other furnishings. You will pick up plenty of Septims through quests. Do not forget to look around every site you go to. Even in corners and on ledges. There are purses hidden around as well.

Here's a great little shack for keeping your things and stuff.

Sometimes if I'm caught feeding on someone (with the bite killmove) in the streets at night I'll have to pay my bounty... alas I don't want to loose all my stolen goods! Tossed em all in a barrel and when I got out of jail it was 3 APPLES.

Lesson learned: Do not stash your stolen goods anywhere that you do not own.

You can store your loot elsewhere but have to go back within (three days I think is the time period) and check up on them which resets the time period. Easier to get a house.

I managed to store stuff in the barrels that are outside Warmaidens (the two outside the front of the shop, to the left as you look at the door when standing outside). In my game, they didn't respawn but I'm unsure if that has happened to anyone else. It was a dumping ground for all the goblets, plates etc that I would pick up. (that was before I just dumped them on Belethor)

I used one of the vampire's lairs when I got to level 4 vampire. I got sick of that and became a werewolf. As long as I visited the site it was OK.
