Crash on startup
Skyrim opens fine and I see the Bethesda logo animation, but right after that it just goes back to desktop. No error message or anything. Sometimes I see the menu screen very briefly but then back to desktop. I had this problem with Left 4 Dead 2 (in which I have no mods) a few weeks ago and I fixed it by reinstalling, but I really don't want to do that again.

Any thoughts?

Hi, I have the same. I've reinstaled and well it didn't help. I'm really mad, I've just bought Dragonborn and I can't play. :((((

Just today I've been having a similar problem. My skyrim won't boot up. It will just be a plain black screen and then it will stop responding. I'm trying to find out why it's doing this.

I think the problem is that your mods may not be updated for the newest version of Skyrim. Click on Data files in the Skyrim start menu and try turning off all your mods, but make sure you leave the .esm files on.

But this happened with L4D2 a few weeks ago and I have no mods for that =l

That sounds like a mod incompatability to me. Either your mods aren't up-to-date with the current version of Skyrim or somethings conflicting with something else. Try verifying the integrity of the game cache as well, because that can solve a lot of problems.

I don't really think it's a mod issue though, this happened to me with L4D2 a few weeks ago and I don't have any mods for that

Ok, it's a mod conflict, now I have to go through and turn each one on one at a time to see what conflicts with what >.< Anyways, thanks for the suggestions guys =)

So the Toy Soldiers mod was the problem. The guy updated it to include DLC content which I don't have. Not sure if this helps any of you others out

aw that sucks. i love our modders but it sucks when they dont make the dlc related updates optional. if you check on SkyrimNexus instead of of steam workshop they may have the old version. nexus mods often have archives of old versions.

Looks like all was solved here, but for anyone else who is having the same crashing problem but with no lack-of-required-DLC issues, I have a bit to add. The load order for mods (if you have any) is very important for the stability of your game. One of the easiest ways to get the load order correct for your mods is to use the BOSS program which can be downloaded through Skyrim Nexus. It does work for games other than Skyrim (but all Bethesda made). Just boot it up, let it run and it will update your load order from its masterlist. If this still doesn't get the job done, or if your game is crashing (at least for me) AFTER you click the start game button on the menu screen you may have a "masterfile" problem. This just means that one of the mods you have installed requires a certain file, a masterfile, to run that you do not have, it cannot find, or is further down in your load order than the mod that requires it (masterfile should be above it). This seems to be similar to the initial problem of this discussion. To find which file is giving you the problem specifically, I would recommend TES5Edit. Here is a couple of videos I found helpful when fixing Skyrim for myself. Hope this helps.
