The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Skyrim causing a total lock up of PC
I am sure this has been discussed before so if you know of a better thread to post this in, by all means show me.

It seems, ever since Dragonborn DLC I have this awful glitch wherein after slaying a Dragon, during the soul absorb (with the particle effects, lighting etc) my computer with completely freeze. Not CTD, not freeze the game - I mean complete and total PC lock up. My speakers will go crazy and buzz loudly, and everything stops working. I have to hard restart to stop it.

I have tried the audio 41 mhz fix, the disable sound hardware, reupdated my drivers, reinstalled Skyrim (twice), played on a character with no mods, and cleaned the DLC and master files with TES5Edit.

It doesn't always happen, it seems random, but when it does it's brutal and I worry my hardware will suffer for it.

Anyone else having this same problem? Thanks

Have you checked to make sure your video card drivers were up to date? Sound Card drivers? All Windows Updates? It's often the most obscure thing that causes the most annoying problems.
Thanks for the reply Arcamean. Good question, yes I can say everything is up to date and that the problem only began after installing Dragonborn DLC and always after slaying a dragon. I played for over 5 hours, killed 3 dragon with no consequence, but that fourth dragon totally hosed my machine. This will be the 10th time this random problem happened to me.
It was the first thing I applied after I tried just a clean game with no mods. It seemed to be working but then tonight it happened again so I am sort of out of ideas. Again, thank you very much to responding
I feel like it is something between my GPU and Skyrim itself (regardless of mods). I am curious is anyone else had suffered this exact failure - the total PC freeze.

My GPU is an MSI frozr II 6950 Radeon HD ATI using the latest Catalyst drivers.

Just a random thought... but it sounds like it could be a ram issue. Is it -just- skyrim or do you encounter lock ups elsewhere? http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=125839153&searchtext=Resolution If it's not this I've no clue, I'm not familiar with ATI video cards I use an Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 myself. I haven't used ATI products since my last Celeron processor.
You are making great suggestions, I have also patched that as well. I am running all the unofficial patches and I know people have mentioned the Unofficial Skyrim Patch was not helping the dragon absorb issue - however this was happening on a clean game with a clean new save files. I can safely say, this issue is not related to mods/patches.

This is a tricky one because I have no way to tell what is causing it. Right now I am leaning on GPU driver issues but the problem has existed since CCC 11 up to v.13.

It's all good buddy, thanks for your help
My computer has locked up a few times, but my mojor problem is the Thieves Guild, when I go into the cistern to join and meet Mercer, they attack and kill me. I uninstalled and reinsatlled, it still doesn't wokk, It crashes constantly i have to save every 30 feet. would it do any good to uninstall steam and get a new one?, I just play it, I don't he mchanic of it. My resolution is 1680 and people tell me that's not good enough any more. It seems like when steam does this they should tell you what your computer needs. They downloaded a enhacement ment pack 03 , I don't have Dragonborn yet or Dawnguard. I have hearth fire.
jo - usually the first thing you should do when troubleshooting massive game problems is to reinstall the game and start a brand new character and try to recreate the problem. I am surprised you had the same problem after a reinstall.

When you say clean game do you mean a game with all mods uninstalled and a full restart from the beginning?
That is what I mean, yes. I blew out my entire Skyrim folder, and my save files, everything dumped and deleted. Ran CCCleaner just for extra assurance too. I created a brand new character with nothing more than Skyrim.esm, Update.esm and the three DLCs. I played for about 2 hours and the first Dragon at the watch tower caused the same massive freeze.

Oddly enough, when I added in the unofficial patches the problem went away for a long while until now...

You said you can play for about 2 hours between each lockup? The program name escapes me but you might want to check the temp of the video card. Makes me glad the worst problem I have is my shield refusing to display on my hand.

edit: I'd also recommend running a mem check, I could be wrong but my gut says look there.

Ah. That does sound a bit like a hardware problem.
Okay update: Ran a monitor while playing, card stays cool and CPU stayed constant untill lock up where it shot up to over 100% (i7 intel) and ram passed checks. Hmm...
Yea, for some reason your video card fan isn't spinning up to speed. If you live near someone whos a computer guru I'd have them take a peek. I did a search and your card got great reviews which is why I'm confused. The only time I ran into this problem was when I tried using two cards in SLI configuration.
