Heartstone discussion.
Heartstones are said to have been flung over to solstheim during the eruptions of red year.
they create ashspawn or tainted spriggans wherever they land.
they are needed in order to control the lesser ashspawn and to summon a guardian.
now, they're called "Heartstones"
they come from red mountain, presumably bits of magma.
you know what else reminds me of a heart that has something to do with red mountain?
the heart of lorkhan.
or more precisely, the heart of a dead god.
The fact that it can corrupt spriggans and raise ashspawn might mean that the heart of lorkhan, while destroyed, had its power flow into red mountain's lava.
gimme your ideas on this, it took me a few minutes to realize that the ashspawn might in fact be the last remnants of lorkhan's now diminished power.

Sadly, Lorkhan's heart is not a part of him since it was thrown down to nirn. It essentially became the heart of reality itself, which is probably why the dwarves disappeared from reality when they tried to attach it to a physical object. Food for thought.

erm, in morrowind you destroy the physical heart of lorkhan in red mountain as part of the main questline. it's the only way to kill dagoth ur.

it's an actual heart in the game, i don't recall it being anything less.

I always thoguht that was interesting too, but I guess that was bethesdas way of making an end-game goal. I never could understand why or HOW the heart could make all the dwarfs disapear just by messing with it, but destroying it is just fine XD

Yeah, supposedly the most likely reason the dwemer vanished was because the guy responsible for using the heart was trying to make all dwemer godlike, and as such he struck the heart carelessly in a last ditch attempt of some sort when cornered by vivec, sotha sil, almalexia and nerevar.
because the heart was geared to all dwemer on the current plane of existence, they were all affected with what i'm assuming is a banishing of some sort.
the only dwemer in the entire world to not be affected was "away" apparently he was traversing the outer planes in spirit, and was unaffected.
anywho, long and short, sotha, vivec, and almalexia betray nerevar and gain godlike power that they have to renew every etc years. that's why dagoth ur became such an insatiable pain in their backsides. he deliberately barred the way to the heart of lorkhan, and created the blight.
then nerevar is reborn, some stuff happens. dagoth dies after nerevar uses the tools the dwemer used to affect the heart to destroy it....
then almalexia and sotha sil are offed in an expansion by nerevar.
because it was the literal heart of a god, it's plausible that the power of the heart mixed in with the magma and eventually came forth as the ash spawn seen on solstheim, which are born from the heartstone power within the lava.
at least that's what i think happens...

bethesda seems to have elaborated on what exactly happened with arniel gane's questline.
The ultimate result is that you acquire keening and arniel tries to simulate what happened to the heart with a warped grand soul gem.
he's then banished and becomes summonable as an ally.
he looks pretty dead though.
