Matters how exactly?

No it does not.

Then you might want to ask on some general TES forum, instead of on one that's dedicated solely for Skyrim. You're going to get pretty one-sided responses otherwise.

Well, two-sided, I guess, because Morrowind.

People are teasing you because it's so subjective and because it seems to come up once every three or four threads.

Because Morrowind, indeed...
They are all excellent. Just remember that the farther back you go, the "less friendly" the game gets. For example, in Morrowind, you do not get the easy fast travel or the "quest arrow" pointing you in the right direction.
All of them are great games deserving of much praise.

Morrowind. Overhaul.
Skyrim, being the first TES I ever played. Granted it was the PS3ver. but I was lucky enough not to encounter some of the gamebreaking ones. At some point last year I got Oblivion and as underwhelmed by what I got. Then at some point in the beginning of January I signed up for Steam just for Morrowind. Once again I was underwhelmed. But not as much as I was over Oblivion. And I'm sure when TESVI comes out in two, maybe three years from now, it'll be better than Skyrim.

It's going to be longer than that. Bethesda is working on Fallout 4, so it might be good 4-5 years until we get the next TES game. (TESO not counting)

All of them are great in their own way. Morrowind has the best immersion, but the combat is stiff and world feels static at times (minus the impact of your decisions on NPCs). Oblivion was really just a stepping stone to Skyrim, but introduced some nice features (as well as bad) that would improve the series. Skyrim is the result of getting rid of a lot of the bad of Oblivion while taking the good, but it still trails Morrowind in immersion in some aspects. The world around you does feel more alive in Skyrim though, I like the routines NPCs have.

Best NPC/faction interaction and immersion, Morrowind. Best combat, surrounding world and character progression, Skyrim. A good game to play between, Oblivion.

They have quite a few divisions dedicated to different projects, so it isn't "one or the other" with Bethesda. I wouldn't be surprised if Obsidian got the next project anyways.

Just saying that's how their release schedule has been so far. 4 years from Morrowind to Oblivion, and 5 years from Oblivion to Skyrim.
Morrowind of course.
I would say Skyrim over Oblivion; don't know about Morrowind.
