In my, not only is it the best TES game, it also is the overall best game ever made.
The main grief against TES IV and V to most morrowind lovers (including me) is immersion level.
In Skyrim and Oblivion (worst IMO), everything is so mundane. In morrowind, you had a tremendous work made on architecture, landscapes, and the monsters seemed to come out of an LSD abuser's mind. Dark elves were at home, so they were racists as hell, making you feel alone and rejected.
Skyrim.. Dragons, wolves and skeletons. Yay. MUN-DANE.
Oblivion.. for me it was the worst in the series, design-wise. Looked awful, felt awful.
Nowadays, people seem to believe that mundane can be great. It can be good, but the overall feeling of morrowind is just way superior.
And most importantly, you can't compare those games gameplay-wise, there's a too big time gap to make any relevant comparison .
You should try it if you can stand the old graphics.
I personally prefere Skyrim for a number of reasons:
1. Larger world
2. Shouts
3. Crafting
4. Level up anywhere
5. Fast Travel
6. Better looking armor
7. I like the people/buildings/culture of Skyrim more than Morrowind's.
8. MUCH better combat!
9. Dragons!
However, there are things Morrowind has that Skyrim dosen't, like weopens variety. Tons of diffrent weopons in that game. Also spellmaking. That was cool!
Really? I've never heard anyone say Morrowind was the best before now. I thought that the general consensus was that Skyrim was the best. I may be wrong, but to me Morrowind's graphics are just to bad, and it's missing many of the key features that make Skyrim an improvement to the series.
@Akarevaar You are correct the general census is that Skyrim is better, but only because Bethesda hit gold on the much larger console market rather than appeasing their long-term PC fanbase. In my opinion it is Skyrim that is lacking in features; the attribute system is gone, spellmaking is gone, immersion gave way to powerlevelling, Skyrim's map quality is highly varied(Windhelm interior anyone?), and the story was rather generic(you have unique powers oh, btw there are dragons). On other features they are even; the culture feels as strong in both and the storys were engaging(if not creative in skyrim's case). The only feature skyrim has that is firmly better is the graphics(and as I said, they are far more inconsistent than morrowind's)
I often hear people mention the fact the spellmaking is gone, but in a game like Skyrim, it would be impractical. There are just too many different spells, and too many different animations, for spell making to exist like it did in Morrowind or Oblivion.
I would have to disagree with your second point, as I find Skyrim to still be very immersive. Clearly you would think different, though.
I feel like Skyrim is a much more refined game than Morrowind. It feels like they've fixed a lot of the previous issues within the series, improved many aspects (lockpicking, perk system, etc.) added quite a few new elements to the game (smithing, dual weilding, etc.) and have only taken out a few features that weren't really important to the success of the series. I feels more tidied up.
