Duplicate Key

Bought a copy of SKYRIM from a local store (GAME in the metrocentre) 4 days ago now. Tried to install it and it says "Duplicate Key" when I type in the number from the sticker in the box! Have raised a ticket with STEAM support now 4 days ago, including a picture of my receipt, and not heard anything. WTF - What is going on? Totally feel like ive just been ripped off and robbed of my £25 ($40). Seriously - what can I do??

Was the game new and sealed or used because that is pretty important.

Also in order for you to have been ripped off, it would have to been intentional at some point.

Was new and sealed. Broke the seal myself! As for the definition of ripped off, lets just say i feel pretty angry at buying something for £25 which I cant do anything with!!!!

I bought an £80 HDD that literally burst into flames after the computer was turned on for a second. I can't do anything with it but that doesn't mean it at all fits the defintion of me being ripped off.

Either wait until you get a reply from Steam (they may have pushed you back in the queue if your ticket was full of angry language) or try get a refund from GAME (slim chance but worth a go).

Also lay off the exclamation marks.

Have you considered returning[www.game.co.uk] it?

Faulty software where the seal has been broken may be returned up to 3 months after the despatch date.

Yes - they told me because it was open and I had broke the seal that I couldnt get a refund

My original email wasnt full of anger lol - but im pretty angry after 4 days I still cant play the game that I've purchased.

If the game, when you purchased it, was sealed and the key does not work you are entitled to a replacement copy.
Game will do this, they have done it for me - you just have to explain it to them. All they do is report the game key to bethesda (who then inform steam) and the game key is locked. Serves them right for trying to use a keygen for a relatively new game. It also means that Game do not loose out, so they will do this

If you hadn't raged at the Steam team they would have told you this almost immediately.

I dimly recall buying an ostensibly sealed, unopened game from GAME (or possibly an EB store before they were replaced by that same entity) which didn't even have a key in the box. I would argue in either case that the product is not fit for purpose.

Yeah I don't think a game shop would allow you to return a copy like that (part of their anti-piracy stuff), but they probably would let you exchange it for another copy (Someone else is using your key right? Probably been using it for awhile).

It says duplicate key? Check if it has already appeared in your account, I accidentally tried installing my copy twice, it said duplicate key on the second run, nothing happened.

If someone does have your key, just wait. You'll get your game and the one who currently has yoru KEY activated will be confronted by STEAM Support.

I am having a similar problem except i bought my game before christmas when i found that it worked fine. Then i recently sat down to play it and all of a sudden it was unplayable and i kept getting the duplicate cd message and was redirected to a the lost account pathway, which then after entering the emailed info, only brought me back to my own normal account which still refused to play it. So I uninstalled it and then tried to install it again and - argg! now it wont reinstall and im still getting the duplicate cd message. I've contacted support but want to know if anyone has any ideas.

You only use the activation key once. Once you have it tied to your STEAM account, you can just select "install" from your game library.
