Are you sure that's the only graphics chip ? [7660G?]

From this link, that's not a very powerful graphics chipset [you say discrete, but the link says it's an integrated graphics].

Ya, that's an integrated setup. The above SKyrim numbers apply

Keep in mind that game companies have been building their game software with consoles in mind. The CPU has a large part in determining the frame rate of many modern games, including Skyrim.

For example. I have an I5 Intel. A quad core desktop running at 3.00 Ghz per core. I have an ATI 6750 and get between 25-35 FPS.

I have heard others with far better hardware talk about how thier GPU is only being taxed at 30% with shadows on ultra, but the GPU will be taxed much higher when they turn the shadows DOWN... This is because most of the math involved with shadows, is done on the CPU and not the GPU. Ultra shadows max their CPU and therefore the GPU is bottlenecked. When they turn down their shadows, the CPU does not have to compute as much math and therefore the bottleneck is lifted, allowing the GPU to work closer to 100%

It's hard to say what kind of frames you'll get with that laptops hardware. But keep in mind that a motion picture on a Bluray only runs at 24 FPS. I'd say 20 FPS and up is totally playable, even if we'd like to get much more.

I have a 60 Hz monitor and I limit my FPS at half my possible refresh rate. (30 FPS) If I can peg my FPS at 30, I get a nice smooth running game with no screen tearing.

So is there any laptop or desktop in the 400-800 dollar price range that has a dedicated GPU and a cpu with a high clock rate?

I'm sure there is, but it has a lot to do with the other hardware too. The over-all Frontside bus...

I have a dual core laptop that has trouble just playing 1080p video at the monitor's native resolution. Especially if I hook the laptop up to a 1080p monitor.

I KNOW a dual core intel chip can easily play high res video, so I must conclude that it's my laptop's front side bus that is causing the problems.

PS - On the other hand, I can run Skyrim fairly well. X3 : Terran Conflict as well. Fairly demanding on the GPU. It's weird.

I hate me some Walmart. I refuse to shop there.

You should check out the deals on http://www.newegg.com or http://www.geeks.com

NewEgg will give you state of the art stuff for the best bang for your buck.
Geeks.com will give you refurbished stuff a couple month old for a STEAL.

Both sites will give you a much better deal than Walmart will. IF Walmart offers a good price on item X, it's because it's cheaply manufactured stuff that will break quickly.

Also... For research purposes, I recommend http://www.tomshardware.com

You're getting some good insights here, and there is no reason you shouldn't continue to ask questions here. But the experts on Tomshardware really know their stuff!

lol i went on newegg before you even posted that statement but ill try looking at geeks.com

Yeah, Geeks.com is a fantastic site. They ship out of California, and offer mostly refurbs; but I have NEVER had the slightest of problems with them, or any of the hardware I've bought from them.

They offer GREAT deals.
