Install from DVD.. and Steam DELETES it?
So I put in the DVD to re-install Skyrim. Everything installs fine. I took a copy of all the DLC and updates so that I could just drag and drop them into my Skyrim folder rather than re download them all...

So you can imagine my surprise when I start up steam, only to see it wants to download 12 GB... Odd.. So I go to the Data folder, and see.... that's right.. Absolutely nothing. There isn't a single ESM or ESP file.

Why the HELL would it delete EVERYTHING and redownload it? Am I missing something else?

Why don't you have it on Steam? You don't need the CD to install it again.

If you have it on Steam, just download it. Uhm, just because you "copied" the DLC doesn't mean its not uninstalled. It is uninstalled.

You can't just copy and paste a DLC to that file. Its like logging onto Steam from one computer then trying to get on another one and it saying that your already logged in. It just doesn't work that way.

Not to be rude but that is probably the stupidest thing I've would ever see someone do. I mean if you uninstalled it, it doesn't mean that your can just put that copied stuff back in there its like "derp, derp, I work again." No, you have to install the game, redownload the content, actually it should work just as it was. With the DLC and everything. Sure if you have SKSE with SkyUI you'll need to update that stuff.
Perhaps I didn't explain myself...

I wanted a clean install of Skyrim. Completely clean. I own the DVD copy of the game.

First I copy the ESP's and BSA's for JUST the DLC and updates to another folder before uninstalling the game. This has nothing to do with mods, just offical DLC.

I now put in the DVD to install the game. The game installs all of the core BSA's and ESP's.. Music, sounds, etc. Again, not the DLC.

Steam then starts and deletes all of the base ESP and BSA files and begins to redownload them - the ones the DVD just installed.

Suprisingly, copying the DLC updates back to the folder took off a 5 GB chunk of download time, so it is, in essence redownloading the whole game, making the DVD pointless.

Is this more clear? Is there something I'm missing? Herp derp?

c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe -install x: skyrim so you can clean install from the DVD ...
Thanks, Jack! I'll try that next time.
