The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Hearthfire blues
Sorry, it's not a song :D

Man, my wife, housecarls and stewards are all dumb. I've a wife who moved into a Hearthfire house without being asked but for some reason provides no Lover's comfort bonus (Ysolda), a steward who refuses to actually live in the damn house despite still offering the steward services for that house (Lydia), and a housecarl who just wanders around outside all day and seemingly refuses to come inside (the default housecarl). All in the hafingaar house. Izzy won't move anywhere else except Breezehome now. All the houses are fully built so beds and whatnot shouldn't be an issue. Does it require a child in a house to move a wife there in Hearthfire?

I tried the Hearthfire families fix mod but no joy. Anyone had any success fixing this kind of thing, particularly Lydia?

I've seen the default housecarl come into the house and sleep on one of the two single beds upstairs. Never seen Lydia sleep or even go into her room at Breezehome. Not married so cannot comment on the rest.
Lyd acts fine in Breezehome, wandering about, sleeping, whatnot.
No, even with mod ' Lydia get out of my room ' she NEVER goes into her room unless she follows me in there then follows me out. If I am in my room she stands in the open doorway and stares. Creepy. Have to tell her to 'Wait there' if you want solitude.
I believe there were some problems with the workbenches still being left in the house which was solved by removing them. Also that adopted children would not move in unless they had a chest each.
The 3 housecarls from Hearthfire all have the same "daily routine" AI package, walking around outside looking for critters to kill is pretty much all they do.

For Lydia, I'm just guessing but the problem may be related to her being the housecarl of your other house. Get the mod to fire her from being stewerd, then try again or maybe pick someone else.

It was odd. I took Lyd to the house, asked if she wanted to be housecarl, she said yes, I bought a cow & chicken (ai-ai-ai-ai-ai-ai) then she buggered off back to Breezehome. Always trouble, that woman. :)
I had the same housecarl problem when i bought Winstad manor. The housecarl would not come in the house. A lot of people say they arent supposed to but they do at LVM. I installed the USP and Hearthfire DLC patch and on first load was instinatly given the "charter" to Winstad. I wasnt given it when i bought the property. After that my housecarl comes in every night around 11 pm sits in main hall or walks around, sleeps upstairs and then goes back on patrol around 6 am

Hm. Well on a different character it all went swimmingly and indicated the 'problem' with the missus. It seems a spouse will only move into houses with children, and would appear that on my other character Ysolda decided off her own bat to move into the house with the child as soon as I adopted, so there you go.

When I arrived at the Pale house with Lydia this time, she initiated dialogue to suggest she becomes steward. I agreed and now she's pottering around the house no problem.

Shame really. I wanted a child-free spouse house to get all the followers round for party time. Though I suppose that's what the 'go to bed, child' option is for hehe.

I dont know about a spouse only moving to a house if you have children. She may have moved on her own after you adopted but i have moved the hubby to several homes and "no kiddies"
Well in a favourable twist, the second child moved into the wrong house, I said to go to the Pale but she went to Falkreath anyway. So I've got my child-free spouse house after all.
