Were previous TES games this (somewhat pathetically) heroifying?
I'm the Dragonborn. A powerful warrior with dragons blood coursing through my veins destined to save the world from evil...

I'm the Listener. As fate would have it I commune with the Night Mother of the Dark Brotherhood directly and this is amazing as ♥♥♥♥. I was destined to be a great leader of the Dark Brotherhood.

I almost single handedly won the civil war for the stormcloaks.

I'm some Archmage Master magic day saving super mage for the College of Winderhold.

I rose to the ranks of the leader of the companions, and it was prophecised in that old leaders dreams and everything. I was destined to be their great ruler.

Every other worldy god I come across tells me i'm the only worthy one ever for some mystical daedric artifact...unless they say i'm not, then I kill them so the can suck it anyway.

I did some ♥♥♥♥ at the Bard College, but if memory serves it was no big deal (for once, and seriosuly, good. Who wants to lead a crummy lame place like that?)

I rose through the ranks of the theives guild and became a Nightengale. And now I am the golorious leader of the theives guild and returned it to its former glory.

Blah blah blah blah blah you get the idea.

Seriously I don't need to be the destined great powerful leader of everything single group in Skyrim. That's hokey and unrealistic as all hell, and if you ask me that (and poor writing/voice acting) seriously diminishes the sense of value/meaning in any of these things. It's hard to put into words, but it's just stupid if you ask me.

I'd be perfectly fine with just being the dragonborn, and then just helping out with the dark brotherhood/theieves guild/companions for a while and have something amazing happen to someone else for a change.

Have the psycho jester Cicero be the Listener, then help him out with his listening ♥♥♥♥. Adventure with him. Help that chick whose name I forget save the day when things get hairy.

Same with the companions. Have Kodlak have picked Aela, or Vilkis or someone whose been around more then a day and a half! Then you can still travel with them to wherever to cure Kodlaks ghost of the curse blah blah...

What i'm trying to say is NOT making you the ultimate hero every time would be welcome for many reasons. It would give the OTHER characters in Skyrim much more personality, and make them seem like great worthy adventures like yourself. Peers in skill. It would help forming a more personal bond with them instead of them always bending to your every whim. Have them talk to you about their crazy unimagined destinies. Get YOU invested in THEM. Everyones so invested in you. I'm tired of everyone wanted to lick my shoes every 2 feet for being so great.

I think I made my point. Does this bother anyone else?

Welcome to Bethesda (and generally modern) games.

It would be nice if every guild wasn't designed to place the PC at the top of it. There are however things that I would rather see Bethesda focus on.

Maven Black-Briar: Bla bla bla... the Dark Brotherhood after you.
Me: What the heck is this ♥♥♥♥♥ talking about... i'm the Listener for crying out loud.

Yeah I know it would requier alot of work on Bethesda's part, but every city and guild feels disconnected from eachother, and that seriously needs to change in the next TES game.

I Agree Dryden, but if a game in this scope is to be be undertaken such attention to detail should not be overlooked.

All I really want is these games to be 100 percet bug free, towns be tripled in size and filled with all unique fully voiced individuals, quests be completely non-linear, combat be much more in depth and difficulty to scale properly, and finally a much cooler alchemy system with an alchemy lab you can expand and make better as you level up. Is that too much to ask? I'd settle for the last 3, though.

Well..... definitely in Oblivion, excluding the main questline. You remain little more than the guy who goes out and kills stuff for the useful people. At the end of the day they praise martin, not you. You can easily become the head of the fighters, mage, thieves guild, arena and dark brotherhood and quickly become world famous and loved, though.

In Morrowind it's a lot more complicated. Every area has its own culture and every culture hates nearly every other culture. If you become the head of the great house telvanni (the people who live on the eastern archipeligo) then nobody outside of the east coast of morrowind will care. In fact, the mage's guild and the other great houses will like you way less. If some people say that you're part of a prophecy, others (most people) will hate you for blasphemy against their religion. So, yeah, you can be important to a bunch of people. Few would ever openly praise your actions ever, though.

I'd agree with skyrim though, in terms of the plot. I didn't really appreciate the whole 'you're the one guy who can kill the big bad dragon, so we should all love you' theme.

Daggerfall > ALL OTHER TES GAMES (except in graphics)

what a lot of people forget about the TES games is you can CHOOSE to be or do what you want you don't have to be the leader of everything, or hero of everything just choose a questline and a guild questline and then call it good if that is how you feel or maybe you get 75% through all the Guild questlines and choose to only finish one, thats what i do hell I dont even touch the thieves guild questline, you also have to take into account that this isn't going by todays requirement for a hero back in the late 1200's William wallace was declared a hero of all of Scotland his prowess in battle was unseen and could be likened to the dragonborn in a way
