I Have Played Games Since The C-64 Came Out
And I have never seen any game better than Skyrim. The old Might and Magics 6-8 were good but they stopped making those after the bomb of Might and Magic 9. But no game I have ever played with the mods and console commands can measure up to this one.

I would like for any of you to give me your opinion. I have a few dollars saved up from my working any games that you would reccommend that are as good as this?

Hmm, think that is just a recent love, because there were literally thousands of mods/*.wads for Doom after it broke mega sales records. Even Morrowind was heavily modded when it released,as eclipsed by Oblivion (in terms of mod numbers)

As for games, it all depends on what you like, what I like may not necessarily mean you will like it as well. Suggestions would depend on what you are interested in. Simulators (space vs realistic)? ARPGs vs JRPGs? RTS vs Strategy? etc..

Also are you stuck with Steam based games or do you consider older games like those on GoG?

I have bought some old games from GOG all of the Might and Magics because they would not play on Windows 7 (my original copies). I have also found save game editors for them.

GOG does have some good old games. I just have never seen a game like skyrim.

You might be right I have bought some other games that have shooters but never seen a game with so many options on the console.

Does Oblivion the previous game have console commands and are they the same?

I agree with you about might & magic, the new ones are not the same thing and I ended up having to play around the bugs in 9.

Skyrim is very stripped down compared to older TES games, so it might be worth picking up morrowind and oblivion since you do like skyrim. Compared to other RPGs that are the best at the open world stuff, not so hot at the story telling or quests. NPCs and dialog work for most things but again at not the best examples from the RPG market these days.

I think its the open world aspect that keeps us all here playing TES games more than anything else.

I believe Oblivion functions differently than Skyrim does.. I never modded Oblivion, but am well aware that it has way more mods than Morrowind ever did. I have modded Morrowind quite a bit. But if your looking for a similar mod setup to Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas is almost exactly like it. I know this due to this video: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/news/153/

Heavy modded Oblivion can be as awesome as Skyrim. Almost. Seriously, I liked the darker atmosphere of Oblivion and my favored guild questlines(DB and Thieves) were better on Oblivion. But I don't think it can outshine the epicness of the Dragon battles(modded for higher levels). Another thing that I liked more on Oblivion was the cities, it really looked like a city not a village, damn! Library(a lot more books and lore), guild quarters, houses for the human beings... It is really a close dispute between those two for me. If you don't have Oblivion pick it, it is really worthy your money.

Prior to Skyrim, Morrowind was my favorite. I would agree Skyrim is one of the best of the RPG gender. I also liked The Witcher 2 very much and played it through a few times. But its not as big and as long as Skyrim can be. Now if you want to talk about GOGs, I've been using and programming computers since the mid 70's (retired for past 10 years), and one of my early favorites was Master of Magic (MOM) as we lovingly call it. I still play MOM occasionally using DOSBOX. Also for the space gender, X-3 Terran Conflict is a very good immersive game.

You are right Might and Magic 9 was a disaster of a game. I think the best was 7 they are very open ended games also. But not compared to Skyrim, I have so many quests going at some points I have to just pick one out and do it.

C 64 you are as old as we live but we live not to get old, great hey? as I stated in other discussions I started with tandy 16 and then amstrad 124. Games from now on need to be skyrim format free to wander, twist and turns but same answer evenually, not a straight- 'follow the yellow brick road' and do not wander off types games

Another oldtimer pop in and give kudos to Skyrim, and even to the whold elder scroll serie :)
I was also a big fan of (H of) M&M serie, and started with it on first installment.....oyea...it has been a big difference from earlier times, at least in graphic display.

So in a few year I assume, and hope, I can lead my Great Gramdson into the same universe :)
It develop the imagination, and that is a good thing to have :)

Yeah, I'm another old fart who remembers playing Pong when it was new. I love all the Elder Scrolls games and am awaiting the Online version. I'm not that keen on online games, but I am willing to give this one a look simply because I like the series so much. As for other games, if you haven't tried Fallout 3 or New Vegas, they are a blast as well, with open worlds and offering the same kind of replayability as the Elder Scrolls games. I second the remark made earlier that Skyrim is actually easier than either Morrowind or Oblivion, but then, given the heavy impact of consoles and the game market trying to be all things to all players, what series in the past ten years hasn't watered down game play to some extent? Skyrim is still a work of art in so many ways.

It's good to see how many so-called "Oldies" playing Skyrim. I too am retired and getting back into gaming after a long long time. Skyrim is one of the most satisfying games I have played and you can really appreciate the effort that has gone into making this a thinking person's game with action to go with it. Also you can play the game any way you want to and in any order (virtually).

I remember the good old days of fighting behemoths in subterranean passages, with a level 10 party. My god, the adrenaline! Thankfully the beasts would get stuck in the doorways, and you could just blast them with arrows until they perished. I loved bugs like that, I loved how BIG the dungeons were in the best M&M games, and the sheer weight of numbers you had to defeat! Skyrim is amazing, over 350 hours logged so far, but too easily unbalanced with mods and console commands, so I have to be quite disciplined. I thought Morrowind was better in terms of lore and open endedness. Oblivion, while graphically more gorgeous than Morrowind, I found too repetitive. My favourite gaming moment of all time is the first sight of Tamriel after exiting the dungeon at the beginning of Oblivion.
Can I ask how to get hold of playable copies of M&M 7 and 8 for the pc? My old games no longer install and I'm dying to play them again ! I loved that card game you could play in the taverns!

The Elder Scrolls series are in my opinion one of the best RPG series ever. I never got into Morrowind though, and by the time I wanted to try it again it was already too much outdated and I couldnt put myself to do any quest really. Oblivion however I put many, many hours in. And even now it still amazes me. Skyrim is alot better even and is easily the best RPG ever. If you never played Oblivion though I would recommend starting that, mods are a must I say though.

If your looking for other RPGs you could try The Witcher (its a bit different though and I never got too far with it). Back in the day I used to play Gothic (1) alot aswell but I believe it might be too outdated if you'd play it nowadays. Other RPG that comes into mind is Two World 2, it's not particularly the best RPG, but I found it just so immersive and I love how they made the water (with actual waves), would just spend my time exploring and swimming around. :P Do mind that most reviews smash it to the ground because of its awkward movement animations and terrible voice acting, still.. I suggest you check youtube for the "Angry Joe review" of the game.

Btw I started on th e commodore Vic 20 with its custom Video interface chip, those were the buzzwords back then. Moved on the the C16 and then the C64, then the Amiga 500+, then the Amiga 1200, then i downgraded on to the PC where technology has not advanced that much in over 20 years. Going from 8 bit to 16bit to 32 bit took Commodore 6 years in total 1985 (last 8 bit machine) to 1991 (first 32 bit machine).

I miss those big leaps in tech every 3 years or so, it was exciting.
