I know this "bug" very well and it seems there is no fix for this problem. Im sorry to tell you this, but as far as I know, its not fixable. But if anyone knows a fix for it though, i would much appreciate to hear it!
When you alt-tab back to the game the first time, you get a black screen in windowed mode. In this mode, move your mouse to the top of your screen to hit the bar, then back to the middle and your mouse will disappear. If you then alt-tab for the second time, your mouse won't be visable in-game.
I had a workaround for this that seemed to work for me -- if I alt-tabbed into the steam client window, then to Skyrim, the mouse cursor would seem to go away while Skyrim was loading back in. Sometimes I would have to do this twice, but it seemed to always work. (Basically - make sure the steam client is the active window, then switch to Skyrim).

on a side note, i kept having to do this to adjust my volume due to having only keyboard keys to control it, but shift+tab to bring up the steam overlay would allow the volume keys to work.

thanks i will try them. Its being doing my head in for a while now to the point of not being able to even play the game for more than a hour because of being spamed with messages outside the game.
well someone somewhere said "disabling desktop composition" solved the mouse cursor issue for him though i never know if it does but i use a even simpler trick i simply open the console before alt tabiing out of game and then close it again and start playing works 100% everytime
i just tab out again and say Cancel
Not 100% sure if it's the same thing that happens to me but when you're going to tab back in cycle through to skyrim a second time and it works without having to quit the game.
What I found is ctrl, alt ,del click on Skyrim and then "switch to". works for me 80% of the time.

80% percent of the time, it works all the time :)

this is an interesting thread -- it sounds like we've found several different workarounds here. for some reason alt-tabbing in the recent ES games is problematic. what are the odds it's fixed in TESVI ?!
ive had the same glithc but with you guys having a solution I SALUTE YOU! :D

You are a genius. Thank you.
or you could use the old bug fix on Nexus: http://store.steampowered.com if you are using skse.

EDIT: OH this post is really old too :D.But maybe there are still some more with this problem so~ nevermind

YOU LEGEND thank you so much (sorry for old thread renewal but sweet baby jesus that bug was pissing me off so much, before your fix I always quit and reloaded the whole game! <3
Was wondering when i started up steam and seen comment lmao xD
I use the 1. In game hit Escape to pause game then Shift-tab for overlay. 2. Alt-tab or Windows key for desktop. 3. Alt-tab to return to overlay--no extra cursor. Depending on what is open you will have to alt-tab at least twice.
