Should I download the skyrim high resloution texture pack if I'm planning to use mods?
Does it improve the mods or are there better mods than the free dlc?

I would they look great and you can still improve more with mods. I noticed a huge difference myself.

From what I have heard and seen, the official HD pack is not that spectacular. If you're planning on texture pack mods, I see no reason to install the official one. Most of it's content will be overwritten by the mods anyway. As for texture mods themselves: I could not play anymore without Skyrim HD (lite) and aMidianBorn. You might also want to check out Vuurt's Flora Overhaul (Basic) but then you'd better have 2GB video ram.

If you want more, I suggest you look up STEP 2.2.6. It's a project that tries to compile Skyrim mods into a guide format. They have many suggestions that you would never find yourself. It's what I followed. Check my Steam profile for some screenshots of what mine looks like now!

The Hd packs were to improve the look, but not so high as to exclude most players with bare minmum machines.

Pick up the full version of skyrim 2k textures (4096x4096 is awesome!!!), as well as Bethesda's official texture pack (gives most textures- 1024x1024, some, however are 2048x2048). This gives an extra edge as it does armour to the same Resolution as Amidianborn, as well as some textures that 2k doesn't do (dlc textures). Install this first, than 2k textures. Improved NPC clothing is amazing too (4k- 4096x4096 textures). If you list your specs, i can determine if you can use these. I also reccomend Project Reality-climates of tamriel, and Project Enb, although most half decent gaming pcs only run with 25-30 fps with all these mods. I get 70 fps outside, and 120 outdoors, but it depends on your system, as i have a GTX 780...

You don't need 2gb of Vram with lite 2k textures and flora overhaul... i would say at least 1gb of gddr5 vram.

It's my experience also. In my case it just didn't work, and support seems to be a bit lacking and slow. I tried Skyrim Mod Manager instead, and I couldn't be happier. I find it easy to use, and it has virtual storage that makes installing _and_ removing mods a blast. Wyre Bash is another popular alternative but I haven't tried that myself.

The majority of the Mods I downloaded and installed using NMM don't install properly and they don't show up in the Plugin Tab.

Are all mods available to NMM also available to SMM?

Yes, SMM has NMM integration. You can even click "download with NMM" on the Nexus, and Mod Manager will handle it for you!

lol aybe you dont have admin permission? maybe the target folders are set to read only?
lol it can also be the mod authors fault, packing the .rar wrong...
