Lydia won't leave me alone D;
Soo, I'm having an issue with Lydia as a follower. I can't dismiss her. She sits around in Breezehome and everytime I talk to her she acts as if she's my follower and the "I think it's time for us to part ways" option doesn't work, it just dismisses my actual companion (Sven in this case). I was using the mod Amazing Follower Tweaks when I recruited her, but none of those dismissal options worked and it's now uninstalled.

I've tried various console commands such as "setfollower count to 0" and "setessential" but there was no difference. I can't even kill her, not with violence or the console command.

I suspect it has something to do with the mod I previously mentioned, because the problem started after I installed it. But I don't know how to fix it.

She is not following you on your quests when you are dismissing her? just sitting in your home?

Im pretty sure Lydia is supposed to go home to your home in WhiteRun when you are dismissing her, this is something that should be in the game, btw why do you want to dismiss this lovely lady ?

She's your housecarl. She's supposed to sit around Breezehome and guard it from nefarious bandits who would otherwise break in and steal all your stuff! Would you prefer that?

You don't recuit her she is assigned to you as housecarl (that in it self tells you why) by her Jarl and she will go and stay at Breezehome when you dismiss her from service but she is yours right through the game (unless she dies).
Build a manor house or houses and she can be steward there and its the same deal as with Breezehome.

Yes, I know she's supposed to sit around Breezehome and protect it from bandits, vampires, rats, Balgruuf or whoever decides to attack considering she's my housecarl, but she acts as if she's my follower when she's not. Everytime I talk to her she has all the options a follower does, but she's not actually following me, and it just dismisses my current follower.

This isn't a major issue, I can just ignore her for the rest of the game, but even if I want to use her as my follower she won't actually follow me. She will remain in Breezehome, but with the conversation options a follower has.

I don't know. I have her as a housecarl, Serana as a follower, and everything is working fine. When I'm at home in Breezehome Serana and Lydia studiously ignore each other, but other than that, seem to get along well. Otherwise, Lydia stays there and Serana follows me.

It may be worthwhile to consider Lydia's[] UESP page to see if anything there could help.

Take your other follower back to where you found he/she and dismiss from service, save then go back to Lydia and try, Have you a manor you could try making her a steward?
How far are you in the game?
If not far go back to where you have killed the dragon and report to the Jarl.
What other follower mods you have on?, UFO mod caused heaps of grief for me and I removed it. Didn't like other follower mods etc,
AFT is OK I have that one to

Thanks Alembrik, I'll check that page.

I tried dismissing my current follower and went back to Lydia, but nothing had changed. She was still behaving as a follower without following me and couldn't be dismissed. I'm quite far into the game and can't go back to kill the first dragon, unfortunately. I haven't tried making her a steward though, I'll do that and see what happens.

I currently don't have any follower mods, I uninstalled AFT and have never tried UFO.

Thanks guys for taking your time trying to help me, I appreciate it.

Did you have her as a follower first and then housecarl? I had her as a follower when I became a Thane of Whiterun and I was living in the Bannered Mare and storing my loot on the floor there (so there wouldn't be ownership problems from using containers). She was staying there too, as I remember. I got a message one day when I was out adventuring that she'd gotten tired of waiting and left, probably to go back to Dragonsreach. When I later went to Dragonsreach and bought Breezehome from the steward, Lydia was at Breezehome when I got there, and everything has been fine since.

I'm acutely aware of Lydia's mortal status, so she now stays in Breezehome. (I'm not aware of any ‘quest problems’ in making Lydia ‘essential’, so I may do that.) Serana and I frequently end up accidental targets of each other's arrows or ice spikes, and have so far both survived to tell the tale.

I only have the Unofficial Patches, so I can't suggest anything with respect to other mods. You might search to see if there are problems similar to yours reported with ‘Amazing Follower Tweaks’ and see if there is a fix.

It might be worthwhile to walk to Dragonsreach with Lydia if she'll follow you there. I have no idea if that will change anything, but it could. Maybe you could dismiss her as a follower there and accept her as a housecarl at the same time.

She is all of them when the jarl assigns her to you when you talk to her to follow, she will tell you all of that you are thane and she is a housecarl and lay her life down to protect you and your property.

She hangs around Breezehome all the time, no way to dismiss her unfortunately. Its a major limitation of the game as far as I'm concerned. Go back to Dragonsreach Lydia! Get the ♥♥♥♥ out of my house!

Can't be done. Get rid of her by recruiting her into the Blades or if you're feeling evil Fus Do Rah her off the Throat of the World (its a very long way down) or heed the call of Boethiah...

You'll find the same trouble with all the other housecarls too.

sounds to me like you have a corrupt save file may have to regress your saves until you find on e that lydia works in.

i have a simular problem with Lydia but it this case a mod or mods has made her killable and i'm not talking about me killing her in the heat of battle now she just dropping dead from random instance, so i have her doing guard duty in my traveling tent.

Look at this way you now have an excuse to redo your game.

I'm a few months late to this discussion but yeah, I'm having the same issue after my Multiple Followers Lite got unhappy with me trying to use UFO with it and I had to remove them both and re-install MFL (Which is a very good mod btw) but now the followers I had are all back in their original locations and have all the follower dialogue but won't dismiss... It's a pain because I want them to follow me again but they just sit around.
So did you find a solution to the problem in the end? I'm surprised and frankly disappointed by almost everyone's responses of "she lives there you can't get her to leave Breezehome" It's kind of obvious that that is not your issue... :s

^^ sounds like an orphan script issue.

Its a mod problem, look to the mod author, nothing to do with Steam really. Uninstalling mods always carries the risk of breaking something in-game (I uninstalled a horse mod once, now there are no horses to buy anywhere in my game, nothing fixes it)

(Script clean tool fixes orphan scripts if they're stuck in an update loop but it won't fix broken quests)
