Adding more RAM where?

it should improve your performance a little bit...
but if you have 4 gb ram anyway, you wont notice too much

If you have 8Gb adding more ram probably wouldn't make a difference as long as you have 3.1GB's available to Skyrim after the OS and background programs are loaded. If you have only 4GB's of ram adding more ram could improve performance.

Adding more ram is not a bad idea and will improve performance in different situations or can help with multitasking if you have different programs running at once.

Uhm, well its not. And the 3.1 Gb cap is for memory used for textures - the remaining .9 Gb is used for the game itself.

If you only have 2 GB of ram [and we can only assume since you didn't give any info], then adding ram to your computer can make a difference

Hope this helps

Standing near the solitude docks and looking at physical memory Performance as follows

total 4087
cached 1331 to 1174
Available 1322 to 1178
Free 55 to 0
The green memory box says 2.82gb

monitor 1360 x768
anti is 8
anistopic 16
High settings
16.9 ratio

^ Available memory is what you got left for the game, the data in the "green" box shows your memory usage for background and foreground services.
And free is what you will use for the game to render new stuff (55-0 is just a 0, and I know it's not "render" per-se but am too lazy to remember the correct wording)

At least 1 more stick of 4GB wouldn't hurt here and would increase your overall performance :P
Check out CTD and Memory patch ENBoost here http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/38649/? and follow every instuction to the tee.
Skyrim will only use 4 Gb of RAM (not video card memory) due to a limitation of 32 bit programs.

Because Skyrim is a Dx9 game, video textures are mirrored in RAM and eat up most of the memory the game can access.

Having more than 4 Gb of RAM will not give you any benefit, having more *VRAM* (from your video card) will. At least up to a practical limit - when you're averaging 90+ FPS additional speed isn't really worth paying for.
