Esbern.

Esbern himself is a bug. My second playthrough now and he still is the same. He is causing me problems and he won't let the story go on. 1st he doesn't open the door in the ratways. 2nd he doesn't have a voice. 3rd in the council he doesn't let the mission progress.
Is there any fix for this damn broken character anywhere?

im having a similar issue everything else in the game works perfectly fine except when i try n talk to esbern in the ratway warrens he wont talk to me at all it just keeps opening the door slit n he yells at me before closing it again

I have all DLCs, Unofficial Patches, High Rez pack, SKSE, SkyUI, plus 60 other mods and have NEVER had this problem with Esbern. If you have the patches and you are still having the problem my guess would be a corupted file or mod conflict somewhere.

Well Esbern bugs the ♥♥♥♥ out of me but he's never refused to talk. Effing Blades. Poor Baurus would be spinning in his grave.

Well the problem goes with the retail version of Skyrim I think. I still have the problem but at least I progressed.
Esbern just is there with no reason of existence than to annoy me.

In the launcher, click on "Data Files".

This problem is not fixed in Unofficial Patches, though having them or USLEEP is highly recommended. Problem is related to how game fails to register Esbern's voice file during initial installation.

Esbern's bug can be fixed quite easilly, just by deleting Skyrim.ini from Documents > My Games > Skyrim. Opening the default launcher after that will regenerate the file. This will allow Esbern's voice file to get registered properly for the game.
