Am I playing this game wrong?
I bought this game because everyone told me it was a "3,000 hour experience for $30!"
however, unfortunately for their recommendations, I got bored to death even by the campaign (Yes, I didn't beat the campaign).

Could it be just because of my lack of interest in RPG games, or am I just not playing it right?

EDIT: Due to the recent OFF-TOPIC flamewar, I am requesting that someone flag this post as people have decided to have an off-topic flamewar.

the base game can be rather boring, thats true.
check out the heaps of mods found in the steam workshop as well as on skyrim.nexusmods.com

Yeah, if you don't like RPGs then Skyrim might not be your thing.

The main questline is the weakest part of the game, agreed.
I really love many other aspects of it though, especially the mods and such from Steam Workshop

But a game should be enjoyable WITHOUT mods, unless if its main purpose is to be modded.
Especially if the game is gonna charge me $30 for it, which I know isn't alot, but still.

I had around 180 hrs before i cared to pogress the main quest after the first dragon.

Like others said , install mods , it makes a LOT of difference , i cant even begin to tell.

And dont play skyrim like you must go to X do Y all the time , the game is about exploring places , and fiding new things( like a strange new quest given to you by a ghost in a tomb and so on ).

i have 600 hours on the xbox version, it can be fun without mods. just explore its not fun when youre just trying to rush throught the main questline walk around listen to a story about some guy who lost is super powerfull sword in a nearby dungeon fighting vampires. then go get it back for him, or keep it as a prize.

If you didn't like the Vanilla game, then you probably won't like it with mods.

When I first bought Skyrim, I was hooked from the getgo; in fact I played Skyrim for 40-50 hours before I installed my first mod.
Mods only further enhance and prolong the enjoyment of the game. But if you do not like the game as a base, you cannot dress it up to your liking.

I think there is a saying, "you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig"
In this case, Skyrim is the pig.

**EDIT**
Maybe your forte might be "Fallout", as it has guns and monsters.

if rpg games are not your thing skyrim could be borig for you, but what makes the game so good is the huge variety of things you can do! like others said, you can spend so much time without following the story. and the mods indeed change a lot. so if you dont like the game at this point i would suggest to keep on playing for a bit, try some new things and if you still dont like it you should try out some mods. you are right when saying a game should be fun without needing to be modded, but hey? if it helps to make skyrim more enjoyable for you, go ahead! i pesonally play almost without mods, just some blood effects and nature stuff to make the graphic a little bit better.

If you don't like RPGs, I doubt you'll ever enjoy an Elder Srolls game.

I've put in about 400 hours total across a bunch of different characters, and I've never completed the campaign.

In fact, the only quest line I have completed is the Mage's Guild/College.

I usually get completely sidetracked by all of the countless places to explore to ever get anything done without spending hours.

Not only have I not done the main quest, but I turned off random dragons because I find fighting dragons boring. Maybe if I play an archer I'll try Deadly Dragons. The main reason I haven't done the main quest is I already watched Tobuscus play the first half of it and I don't want to watch the cutscenes again.

Of course you're not playing the game wrong. But I think you already know that. You are paying it with the wrong attitude. If your "lack of interest" in RPG games makes you bored, then you should not have bought this game. Skyrim is not for you. Move on.

i'd recommend maybe buying some DLCs, they usually refresh the game. i'm glad i bought legendary edition, a little cool place is "Redwater Den" from Dawnguard where they "SPOILER":
makes "Redwater Skooma" a more powerfull skooma with same effectsas sleeping tree sap

Skyrim in and of itself is just a bad RPG. Having a crapload of mods will make the experience better but if you want a real RPG you'd have to go for something older like Baldurs Gate, Planescape Torment, Fallout 1&2 and(while not older) the Witcher series.

I say this because Skyrim was touted as a huge game where your decisions at certain points would play out later in the game and who you side with could change the attitude of Skyrim. In reality you're left with a few altered lines of text and Red/Legion flags on forts or Blue/StormCloak flags.

The loot system is horrid, animations are absolutely terrible and the "epic" dragon fights are more annoying than a cat yowling while trying to fall asleep as Dragons almost never land and when they do they're completely easy enemies to defeat. Also, there are no Dragons, just Wyverns. Even Alduin is a Wyvern for some reason.
