Renaming alchemy potions.
I have been looking for a mod to rename crafted alchemy potions. So far it seems that no one has done such a thing. That is a bit sad, because potions are named after their first efffect, despite other effect they might have. This makes managin crafted potions a bit too messy.

Does anyone more knowledgeable about Steam an Nexus modding discussions lknow if mod like this is possible or under development?

If not, did someone more skilled with Skyrim modding just get inspired to do such a thing? My own preciously little free time and energy is drawn by SC4 lotting and studying economics.

(I have asked this before, but one user was determined that asking about renaming items under the topic "Renaming itmes" was not allowed.)

Also, the names might change or be more relevant once you have the "Purity" perk.

Renaming items sounds simple and it actually is. The problem comes when there are multiple mods that might reference that potion. I noticed this when I was trying to see what conflicts the old Better Sorting mod had. Let me just say, it was eye opening how time comsuming it would be to accomplish this.

So for example, Mod A renames Fortify Health potion to Heath Fortify I
Great! Right? No, because just Mod A may or may not include the fixes incorporated in the unofficial patches. If it does, great, but you are probably going to want to verify all of them. So this is where the load order of the mods come in to play. Skyrim sets the potions one way, then the unofficial patch sets the potions another way, then the renaming mod sets them another way.

Now, you could create a custom esp file and incorporate all the value and duration fixes from the unofficial patches and the names you want your potions to be. But what if you use a mod that uses custom textures like radiant potions? Well, not that mod wipes out your renames. It would take a lot of time because you are going to have to touch and validate every potion and ensure the load order of your renaming esp file allows for no conflicts. Also, every time you installed or updated a mod you'd have to check to make sure the records in your custom esp didn't get overwritten by a later loaded mod.

I'm not saying it's impossible, just a lot of work. You'd be surprised to see how many things might touch a record that you wouldn't think would.

This applies to all thing also. I wanted to do this for books, ammo, weapons and found that I'd spend more time making this custom esp than actually playing the game.

P.S.
There is an updated version of better sorting out there, I researched it, and still found that it conflicted with a alot of things and many of the things renamed were overwritten by other mods later in the load order.

Okay. I have been studying the subject and it seems that Theoran is right. This is not as simple matter than I had hoped. Of course it should have been obvious, or fucntional mod like this would have allready been done.

Oh well. Next time I accidentally shoot a bandit with a poisoned arrow that actually replenishes his health, I can only blame my ESPs (instead of my self for being careless enough to leave the bottle in to my inventory in the first place.)

;)

It's a bit of a PITA, but I have taken to favouriting ALL potions I want to keep for my own use, so I know that the others should be sold, or at least not used. I use SkyUI, though, so that has tabs for spells/potions/gear/all favourites on the Q thing, it'd be ridiculous otherwise, esp when a different magnitude/duration makes it technically a different potion, but possibly still worth keeping.

I have SKSE SkyUI, they are essential for my caravanner play (I made a thread of it.)

Because I have so much stuff in my inventory + my horse + my Lydia + my Faendal + ... well, you get the idea, my favorites list is also as long than Hunger year. I really should use more tricks to keep it in order.

That is actually why I originally asked about renaming potions. I craft some of them in the middle of wilderness, often just before actually using them. Searching trough potions with same names but varying effects, in the middle of a battle, is not the funniest part of this game.

I think I just stick shady potions to my horses inventory and sell them straight to vendors.

Yeah, I mostly make the Blue Flower/Wheat health potion, and it always is named as 'Fortify' even though I want it for the 'Healing'. Still lack 4 Alchemy levels to get the Purity perk but since both are positive affects, I doubt the name will change.

I realize this thread is nearly a year old, but perhaps someone will read it anyways... xD

Honestly, I'm still surprised such a mod hasn't been created yet. I mean... Potion-creating/naming was a feature in Oblivion, so why not Skyrim?

I understand what Theoran was saying, but... Couldn't this be done without worry of mod conflicts? Maybe I'm a bit dumb or naiive, but.. Couldn't we just create a mod like this:

As with Oblivion, keep the vanilla potions. Allow the player to create their own NEW potions with their own effects (I've seen mods with this capability already)... And have the ability to simply create a new name for that new potion? There shouldn't be any interference with other potion mods, etc. then, correct?

I mean... you wouldn't be changing the vanilla items themselves, nor the vanillas potions' reference ID numbers and reference names.. And there'd be no need for a mod to call for player-made potions...

Again, sorry if I'm not making sense or sounding stupid xD I just don't see why this cannot be possible (and not too overly complicated)?

You know what it'll probably be made because you brought it up but the person will charge for it.
