sorting the unofficial patch files
I applied the Unofficial Skyrim patch. Now I can't absorb dragon souls. I ran BOSS to sort the load order and the patch file is right below Update.esm. I didn't download the unofficial patches for the add-ons. Do I need those too?

By add-ons you mean DLCs? While further development for Skyirm is closed, unofficial patches are only new viable fixes you will get, so getting them to DLCs as well is recommended.

Alright, so I'll get the patches for the DLCs as well. One more thing, any idea how to use BOSS to sort the files? I've just been pressing the Run BOSS button and it hasn't been enough

Running BOSS opens a balck (command prompt like) screen. It first checks master file to select a proper file order and then runs its course. It usually opens an HTML page after it is done, unless you have disabled this feature from the same page.

That is how it works. There shouldn't be more to it. Sometimes BOSS fails to check the list. Just waiting a moment and running it again should fix it.

This is my load order for Skyrim, all the DLCs (including the free optional High Resolution Texture Pack):

  • Skyrim.esm
  • Update.esm
  • Unofficial Skyrim Pack.esp
  • Dawnguard.esm
  • Unofficial Dawnguard Patch.esp
  • HearthFires.esm
  • Unofficial HearthFires Patch.esp
  • Dragonborn.esm
  • Unofficial Dragonborn Patch.esp
  • .. you may have a couple of mods here...
  • HighResTexturePack01.esp
  • HighResTexturePack02.esp
  • HighResTexturePack03.esp
  • Unofficial High Resolution Patch.esp
  • ... rest of mods...

You may have the Bethesda official ESM files lumped together at the top, which is also fine, as long as Skyrim is first, and the Unofficial Patches are loaded after the DLC the fix.

If you have a good/valid load order, BOSS will not appear to do much of anything.

The latest stable BOSS version is v2.1.1, (Dec 2013 I think) available from the BOSS github[boss-developers.github.io] page.

For more information on BOSS (aka B.O.S.S.) see this Steam thread Mods, Managers, and B.O.S.S. which includes links to tutorial videos.

Hey, how does downloading the patches through NMM work? When I downloaded the DLC patches, they appeared in the Download Manager but they weren't added to the list of plugins. Where as when I downloaded the Skyrim (main) patch manually, it showed up on the list of plugins

You have to "activate" the mod first.

On the Mods Tab (not the Plugin Tab), select the particular mod in the middle File & Folders widget, and then click the second from the top button on the left column (a blue puzzle piece with a green arrow).

If the mod has an associated ESP or ESM file, it will now appear in the Plugins tab.

Alright, I got all the mods activated and I ran BOSS to sort it out. I think it's working properly this time. Thanks

so i download the high res pack but i dont get
HighResTexturePack01.esp
HighResTexturePack02.esp
HighResTexturePack03.esp
with it, just
Unofficial High Resolution Patch.esp
and this is causing the load order to not function properly as the mod hasnt install all the files needed...i have downloaded this mod manually and by NMM and it still hasnt made a difference

High resolution pack comes with the Legendary edition of Skyrim. What you have downloaded isn't a mod itself, but Unofficial - and highly recommended - patch for it.

Edit: If you do not have these files, then they should be available as free download in Steam.
