Failed to initialize renderer in skyrim. What up with that?
Skyrim is giving me the error "Failed to initialize Renderer.
Your display doesn't support the selected resolution."

I've had Skryrim for about a week. It launched without trouble the first few times I played. Today it decided to throw up this message. I tried some tips from other discussions I've found in the archives of forums past, but to no avail.

So far, I've tried reinstalling direct x. I've also checked if certain files were marked as read only such as: SkyrimPrefs.ini in my Steamapps folder, and other files such as SkyrimPrefs.ini and Skyrim.ini which are located in documents>My Games>Skyrim. One such file was marked as read only, but even though I changed it, the game would not launch still.

My system specs are 6GB ddr3 ram, GeForce GTX 560 Ti, AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 645 Processor, Driver Version 332.21. I am running Windows 7 64-bit. My current resolution is 1920x1080, 60Hz.

Any suggestions would help. I want to play Skyrim. :(

open nvidia control panel->3d settings->search for skyrim and select your video card there

Thanks, NightCore. When trying to open the nvidia control panel, I get the following message, "Nvidia Control Panel Application, 7.5.790.0 has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I'm stumped. Maybe I am not destined to become Dragonborn after all.

If you haven't already, reboot your computer (due to the "Nvidia Control Panel Application, 7.5.790.0 has stopped working.").

Then try deleting RendererInfo.txt located in
%USERNAME%\(My) Documents\My Games\Skyrim\

Launch the Skyrim Launcher, and select Options and click on the Default button.

No dice, ShinyToyGuns. The same messages are occurring. Thanks for the suggestions though.

update your video card drivers. make a completely new install of them. then your control panel should work.

I'd use the maunfacturer's removal tool to cleanly and completely remove the video driver and associated s/w. Then install the current driver set.

the latest nvidia drivers clean up themselves...

So, the removal tools are for entertainment use only. Every graphics card manufacturer has a removal tool and all state IF you are still having problems ...use it. Without the tool I'll bet Bit coins that there are at least orphaned registry entries.. every time. The latest drivers may do a better job but often people have upgraded their drivers multiple times and previous iterations leave garbage behind to which the current uninstaller is oblivious, hence a removal tool.
