Bethesda, doorways, and followers
What is it with all Beth games from Fallout 1 and TES 1 on, that followers will *always* block doorways. You know, followers will usually follow you around at a certain distance, let's say 6 feet. However, let there not be a doorway that they can block and trap you in... They will always stand exactly there. If you are 2 feet from the door, they will not back off to the customary 6 feet. 2 feet is fine, as long as they get to block your exit. If you are 15 feet into the room, they won't leave their post either. If the room is small and doesn't let you go further, you can count on needing FusRoDah, or charging into them, or killing them. (The last option becomes more attractive as the follower gets more annoying). I wonder, why haven't the peeps at Beth figured a script or something so followers will actually AVOID doorways?

Have you tried to use follower mods, like Amazing Follower Tweaks or Ultimate Follower Overhaul? I am using latter and have very little problem with followers.

I just tell them to relax in a safe location, so go about their business without blocking my every doorway. I am playing a stealth character, so I tell more heavily armored followers to hang back, while in dungeons. They come soon enough for help, if you retreat to them while chased.

One benefit of UFO is the book that you can find from Breezehome. This book contains shout commands for all of your followers - if you have more than 1. This is very fun with mods like Civil War Overhaul, when you can practically collect your own Civil War unit from followers and complete skirmishes with them. I don't know if AFT has similar features.

Have you had any problems with UFO? I didn't install it because of many reported incompatibilities and bugs.

@ Tilted Domino- I have that mod. It worked great at first, then not so much as followers returned to their obstructive behavior. I know it's still there because followers occasionally do back off as intended.

UFO was made to be compatible with most mods out there. I haven't had any problems with it. Bugs that I am aware of became from stubborn people insisting that their load order or personal hack is fine.

This does not mean that I would blindly recommend it to you. There are differences between mods.

Amazing Follower Tweaks is a NPC tinkering mod. It makes UFO to look old and clunky, by allowing all sorts of cloth, jewelry and adult toy collections for your followers. It is a best mod for anyone, who treats their followers as paper doll characters. That phrase might sound a bit rude, but I assure that it is not. I am personally micromanaging all my followers in almost any other game than Skyrim.

UFO is more straightforward than AFT. You can't tinker around your followers that much, but you can command several followers as one unit.* AFT is perfect for NPC-intimate games. UFO is perfect for action packed games. You can use both to collect your own unit for Civil War (Overhaul) and making bloody skirmishes with it. UFO allows you to actually treat your followers as a unit, while AFT puts more weight for individual commands.

Compare these mods and then make a decision. In any case, I would recommend that you install Convenient Horses, instead of using inbuilt horse selections. UFO has a choise to disable all the mods own horses, when speaking to Skulvar Sable-Hilt at Whiterun Stables (You know...)

* UFO unit commands require a book that can be found from Breezehome, or trough console command. I actually consider the Breezehome location as a bad choise from mod author, because not all of us are buying it.

just use the in-game follower commands to move your followers

Yeah now I remember that it was the incompatibility with CH that made me balk (the modder mentions it but it only says he's working on it, not that it's been fixed).

CH? Could you elaborate?
I am customed to use UFO and I am curious to know, if there is actual bug that I should be aware of. :)

This is so annoying, I don't see why Beth can't sort it out. I remember HL2 nearly 10 years ago didn't have this problem, Alyx would get out of the way with a "Sorry, Gordon".

If Valve could manage it 10 years ago why can't Bethesda manage it now? C'mon, get with the times.

If you just sprint into your followers, that will typically shove them out of the way.

Well, I don't know really. The modder (for UFO) says in the Nexus that it is incompatible with Convenient Horses. So I stopped there and didn't download UFO. Do you have both? How do they work together?

Oh. But followers stood in doorways in those games.

If you are using mods, please don't blame Bethesda for your problems. Regarding Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics, it is obvious that you have never payed those games.
