Hi Res Texture DLC. Disabling causes freeze
Hey all.

I cant seem to disable the Hi Res Texture DLC in the launcher...if I untick them then I cant load savegames..I click on the save(or 'continue') then the game just freezes forcing me to alt-tab out.

If I reselect the DLC it works fine again.

Anyone know what to do to stop the game using these DLC textures?

Thanks all.

(Ive done a few searches online, but most of the fixes seem to be concerned with deleting or removing them from accounts...I dont need that...Im happy to keep the 3gig odd files...I just dont want to USE them any more...and potentially replace them with user made ones in the near future)

use the unofficial patches for skyrim. also available for the high res textures

You are pulling the data out from game. It crashes, while saves are searching for the data that does not exist. While few mods can be removed from the ongoing game relatively safely, it is usually a very bad idea.

HD Textures is literally that, HD Textures. Remoing that DLC and proceeding to launch a save taht used it will have no lasting effects. OP likely has a mod installed that required them (such as the unofficial patch) or another mod which their save requires changes order.

Yes, very likely.

Now we are already talking about removing at least 1 or several other mods from the game. Do you now undestand my point? :)

For OP:
I am not saying that it can't be done. It depends what other mods might be using those textures. Did you run BOSS or LOOT after removing them? It should tell you what mods require the missing data. When we are speaking about textures, then the amount of those mods is not likely very high.

To be fair, I'd imagine the number of mods that rely on the HD textures being present is fairly low.

Yes I only have around 16 mods, and none are flagged by LOOT or ES5Edit as needing the Hi Res packs....

Im going to try running the 'Hi Res DLC Optimized' mod...all Im trying to fix is a small micro stutter that happens when entering combat, passing through the world cells outside, and some long load times when entering the world from indoors...

The Hi Res DLC textures were just fien all the while I had no mods, but now I have things like CoT and improved dungeons etc, I just dont think the official DLC is worth hanging onto and loading each time..since LOOT puts it top on load order, so Im sure quite a few of its textures end up over ridden by mods lower on the list....

Id like to SEE at least if disabling them cures the small stutter Ive been having xD

Every other mod Ive used is quite happy with being switched on and off for comparisons.

Thansk for the replies anyway....very strange decision to make this DLC so tough to opt out of once you have opted in...I bet its caused a lot of people problems.

You would think that since its free, they would have been better of putting it in the Workshop, rather than tying it to accounts as a DLC...

That's fair.

I understand what you mean, but really doubt that Bethesda wanted to tie their official products to Steam Workshop...

Well, While I never managed to disable or remove the textures, I DID fix the micro stutter that caused me to want to remove them in the first place : D

I installed 'Unofficial High Resolution Patch' and 'Hi res DLC Optimized (Hybrid 1024/2048 version)' from the Nexus....

The game now runs better than ever before, happily bumping up against the limiter in all situations so far....

Great work from the modders, and thanks for the replies : D

I have to recommend these patches to anyone with any stutter/freezing issues while using the Hi Res texture DLC. I was a bit wary, but I chose the versions that do not make permanent changes, and are easily disabled/removed.

BEHOLD!

That was a good course of action. Unofficial patches come well recommended.
Glad that you managed to work it out.

I have Hi Res Texture packs 1,2 & 3, unofficial texture patch, COT and about 7 other graphic mods install and do not have issues.
Each to their own choices.

I am riding with HiRes texture packs + Unofficial patches + Cot + ENB + 2K HD textures in top of them, because custom textures rarely manage to cover everything in game.
