When you stayed at all those inns didn't any of the keepers tell you about Aventus Aretino and how he is trying to contact the Dark Brotherhood? That is how you start your journey with the Dark Brotherhood, not by killing random innocent people like in Oblivion.

Yeah, you have to talk to Aventus. He then gives you a quest to kill Grelog the Kind. After you return to him, at some point a courier will come up to you talking about some creepy person (I believe). All the note says is "We know." with the Black Hand insignia. Getting the note doesn't start the line, however. You need to sleep for any number of hours in any available bed. Upon waking up, you'll find out Astrid kidnapped you and wants you to kill 3 hostages.

Personally, I kill all 3, but it's you're choice who you kill.

Sounds like you're thinking of Oblivion. In Oblivion that's the requirement in order to start the Dark Brotherhood. However in Skyrim, its a bit different. You have to go to Windhelm and go to an inn. An Innkeeper should tell you about a boy named Avento Aretino as minoravatar said. Then you just go talk to him.

Go to bed wake up somewhere else that the actual start of quest, all the rest is introductions to it.

1) kill grelod

2) go talk to Aventus

3) sleep

4) kill Astrid and wipe out the DB.

Well, that last step is optional. Its what I did anyway.

Good old Skyrim quest-railroading at its finest.

Well not entirely before you kill grelod you should talk to aventus (mission start)
Semi Green Apr 21, 2014 @ 9:28am
you can either kill grelog first, then trek to windhelm, talk to aventus and then sleep
talk to aventus in windhelm, trek to riften, kill grelog, trek back to windhelm, talk to aventus, sleep.

Well I thought I read somewhere that killing grelog first could break the quest ...

Funny in oblivion you murder good and innocent people to join the brotherhood, but in skyrim you kill a child abuser

Yeah, I've only once killed Grelod without speaking to Aventus first (the first time I went to Riften, had no idea she was connected with the DB but just wanted her punished, then looked her up, realised she was quest-related and reloaded) but doing stuff out of sequence quite often does mess things up, I wouldn't risk it just to potentially save a tiny bit of time, unless I was *really* keen to get to the DB within the first couple of levels, and tbh if I did, I'd just use Live Another Life to start off in the Sanctuary.

Suits me. Also makes more sense, given they are meant to be looking for *assassins* (someone who will kill on command) not murderers (someone who kills for... whatever reason they come up with, I guess).

1} "So why did you kill?"
2} "I dunno...he looked at me funny?"

You have to speak to Aventus Aretino before you can go about joining the Brotherhood. You will find him in the west side of Windhelm in his house. People around Skyrim may mention him which should trigger the quest, you can use this as a way to find him. I belive your thinking of Oblivion, as other have mentioned. Stop killing randoms because the Brotherhood will not appear ;)
