Skyrim Combat
Hey guys iv been playing a few hours now...

So im using a sword one handed. When in a fight im basically just hacking a slashing. Is there any strategy to the sword fighting or is it basically tap until they are dead?

Thanks

It is just "tap until they are dead" :/ but there are mods that change combat! :)

There is not much variety in the vanilla sword etc attacks. The skill tree just adds bonuses to % damage or crits. Power attacks like running or the "sprint" perk are meh. It seems that using the default "a" and "d" key (lateral movement) deals more damage and then there is always the "block" to mitigate damage. That seems to be about it without mods. Oh, holding attack longer seems to be a power attack while a shorter duration is a normal attack... again, meh.

About the only strategy involved in the sword and board is the timing of the block. You'll find yourself in the rhythm of block swing swing, block swing swing. Even dual wielding its run away, side slide power attack and so on.

I would definitely love to hear more fighting strategies from the vanilla crowd, and what combat mods people think are worthy of use. I've recently downloaded an archer mod, mostly because I wasn't happy with the original zoom to stamina ratio. The mod I chose allows me to put a second perk into it which will allow me to take more time aiming. The cursor in Skyrim is sooo sluggish.

I mostly play ranged and stealth, but when I do have to go toe to toe, I try to dodge and block when I can. Most of the melee NPC enemies telegraph their attacks. After a while, you can learn to read and counter.

I haven't looked at combat mods. I try to avoid direct combat whenever possible. I think I might, if anyone recomends specific ones.

Why are you using only one sword? If you're playing one-handed, you should be either a spellsword, dual wielder or just use the traditional sword and shield. There's absolutely no advantage to holding a sword on just one hand while your other hand goes to waste

I strongly disagree. Fighting with just a one sword is a quite powerful combat style. It is a leathal dance, built from speed and rhythm - completed by Dance of Death - and definetly something to try out.

Those "useless" one handed perks just became important. I have abandoned both dual-wielding and shield to master this style.

And I am having fun.

in response to people asking about other's combat mods:

There are lots of combat mods and a number of bigger overhauls. I've always preferred to use a group of smaller mods to make a compilation for different things like combat, stealth, weather, etc. as I don't like how much most overhauls change.
However, Ultimate Combat or SkyRE's combat are supposed to be good.

I use:
Deadly Combat - makes the combat feel more full and is fast-paced, though highly customizable so it could be slower or easier if preferred.
TK Hitstop - adds a lot more force to the combat. just feels better.
TK Recoil - adds recoil to long-range weapons and does it quite well.
TK Combat - this one might not be for everyone but it adds special attacks to weapons and gives a bigger variety

Enemy AI Overhaul - may or may not be for everyone but does a bunch to the enemy AI and works alongside Deadly Combat. When I directly compared it on and off, it made quite a big difference in how the enemies attack.
Enhanced Enemy AI - pretty good too, though it seemed to make enemies magic too strong.
Enhanced Mighty Dragons - my favourite dragon mod. makes the dragons have different types that use their own set of shouts from lightning dragons to fus shouting biters to dragons that turn invisible. its pretty cool. It may work alongside some of the others but I haven't bothered.

I think both work together, though I'm just using the top one for right now.

Not direclty combat related, but some others I like that relate:
Dance of Death - good.. though I mainly use it to turn off decaps.
Dual Hand Hotkey Combo - a must if you like to dual-wield and use multiple attack styles.
Proper Aim + recommended ini edit - Great for archery
Customizable Camera - A huge must have for me. Lets you customize the cam. Proper aim and the ini edit is recommended if you go third-person shoulder style when in combat and use archery.

-----

As for combat styles.. my first time playing Skyrim I didn't even realize there were hotkeys so I didn't change much mid-battle. I used a one-handed sword alongside some destruction spells. Eventually I just swapped to a restoration spell and would spam power attacks then restore my stamina and repeat. I used vanilla combat back then too and it was mostly just hack and slash.. and pretty bland. Definitely a boring way to play.

As I'm playing now, I use the mods listed above and try to remain stealth a lot (I use a handful of stealth-related mods too since vanilla's is rather bad) and use two daggers for sneak attacks, combat cross whip (stat-wise like a 1h sword) and a dagger for non-stealth attacking, a bow for stealth or long-range fighting. and the occasional heal spell to heal up.
Having a lot more fun this time around for sure.

Its not always about what's the most effective. Its about the way you enjoy playing.
Anyways, if someone wishes to only use one sword and nothing else then they may consider this:

Thank you so much Emcitement. I will check each of these out. I wasn't excited about the overhauls since undoing them would probably entail reinstalling the game if I didn't like them.

And a one handed style? You are my hero. My Mouseketeer will live again! Now to find that mod that had the Rapiers. A blue, silver and white Tabard, a leather hat with a fluffy ostrich feather and i'll be set.

LolCats. As many kill cams as I get with my shield, I swear my Priest must have forgotten about his vow not to use edged weapons and sharpens the bottom edge of his shield at night.

Cool, glad to help. Yeah, I agree for that reason and just because a lot of overhauls change a little too much and make it seem like I have less control of it.
Of course all those mods aren't for everyone, but maybe you'll like some of them. A lot are real customizable. Just made combat a lot more fun for me

I use flames in the opposite hand, i didnt mention that as i didnt feel it was relevant to the post.

The combat is kind of stale i suppose, but the game gets away with it because its so awesome.

Not keen on adding mods to improve combat, maybe to improve visuals but thats about it.

Thanks :)

Now we just need the modding community to add more oriental weapons, like escrima, and I can recreate my wandering monk named Bumpy. Wahechaaa!
