I have had mods for months with no problems. Now, Skyrim loads up like it usually does and gets past the bethesda screen then the screen goes black and puts me on my desktop. What gives?

Check to see if any mods recently updated . plus look in data file to make sure all are check. There was a problem and for about a week mods limit was dropped to 50 and many of those above the limit became unsubscribed.

^^ yes it could be your load order got messed up because of that bug. If you have BOSS it can check your load order for you.

Skyrim worked perfectly earlier today. Should I reinstall it then try again?

Maybe verify your game cache for missing files first.

how do I do that?

Right click on Skyrim in you steam games menu, choose properties, then the local files tab, then you will see the verify integrity of game cache button.

That means your mod load order is wrong or one of the mods requires another mod/DLC you don't have.
This tool should help you fix your problem:

how should I change the order then?

Let BOSS change it for you that is the main use for that program. There is a good read me included with the program and it is pretty easy to use once you get used to the interface.

how can I fix skyrim without downloading anything like BOSS?

Did the verify game cache DL any files when you checked it? That may fix the problem.

I have windows 7 and it says nothing about game cache files

what should I do and where should I go?

Also whatever mods you have you can look at the descriptions of them and they will tell you if it needs to be before or after other mods. You can change your load order from the DATA tab in your launcher by selecting the mod and moving it up or down as needed. Another thing you can do it turn off all your mods, then turn each one on, launch the game and see if it CTD or not till you find the one causing you grief.

I have a brand-new computer and I have the Legendary edition of Skyrim. Shouldn't all mods work?
