Dawnguard broke my save files
So after some confusion I think i've found the problem, but I don't have a solution. After reading around it apears Dawnguard became free for a weekend or something, which makes senes becuase i noticed a few months ago people in my game started mentioning the Dawnguard, even though i never purchased the DLC. I recently re-formated my computer becuase i got a new harddrive, and after trying to boot my previous save files Skyrim gave me an error saying that missing data would cause problems and sure enough, my game CTD when I try to load the save. I never asked for this, steam just went ahead and installed Dawnguard on my system without my permission, and now i can't play my save file with 200+ hours of game play. What the hell am i supposed to do?

Cry like a fool, no disrespect intended. I don't think there is a fix.

then they should foot me a copy of dawnguard. They didn't even have a prompt to install the game or anything, they just did it without user permission.

Umm just be glad that if you did have it that you might have run into the vampire quest glitch even to this day that glitch exsists it renders quest bosses and such in the ground where you cannot kill them or talk to them or my favorite part of the vampire quest glitch when you get a quest to turn the same person again into a vampire that you already turned into a vampire and no matter if you have a clean save or not that glitch is impossible to get away from I have the xbox-360 version of this game too same problem there...And yes even if you didnt ask for dawnguard you will probably be seeing small problems like you have in the future I am not tech savy but I know glitchs very well...And dawnguard once on your game os is impossible to fix...part of the skyrim fun you get with games that are great. Oblivion was the same fun but had issues blah blah well good luck with the problem unless you have about 30000 hours to check all lines of code on your system I would just roll with it or buy the stupid dawnguard addon...as for me they shoved magica onto my computer and now I sometimes endup on sites I never asked for...without warning I am watching hulu and the next I have a advertisement to buy magica and I cannot get rid of it.

Not much to bump for. Data is in your saves and can't see that there is curently any way to drag it out of there.

I am sorry, but this is something you have to take up with Steam. You need the Dawndguard, so you might have to buy it. Either squeese them a proper discount from harm they have done, or start a new and leave a proper reclamation. Those are pretty much only reasonable options around.

Just wondering if you have over 50 mods? There is a bug with all the workshops that has unchecked mods if you have more then 50, that may be your problem not the Dawngaurd. You might just need to recheck your mods in the data tab, you will get that message about missing files from mods not activated as well.

If they gave you Dawngaurd for free you get to keep it forever (they did that with L4D2 not to long ago), Verify the integrity of your game cache and it will DL it again for you if you had it. You can check your properties to see if you already have it installed under the DLC tab first to save time if it is already there.

I checked my steam page and it says I don't own dawnguard dlc. I also don't have any mods installed save the hd texture pack, which I currently have. I really do think it's the missing dawnguard data in my save file.

OK There might be a way to save you game still, a new mod just came out Skyrim Game Script Cleaner [www.nexusmods.com] that should remove the uninstalled scripts and items of Dawngaurd from your save game. You don't even need to DL or use the NMM to install this mod since it is a stand alone .exe file that can be unzipped anywhere you want it to be. Use it to delete any script with #-> as the first three things, and then click the "Fix Script Instances" to delete some more things, and lastly click the "Clean Havok Moved" to replace Skyrim to its default state. Anyway hope it works for you to fix your save game.

It is fun, even more so if you're into vampires and werewolves.

Just please don't press "Del mod forms" I did that myself as a test and everything reset, I mean everything.. I was still in the same location, but it was like a new game, I was a lvl 1 and in whiterun (where I saved) just all the dialogues NPCs etc were like I first encountered them.. although you could use that as an alternative to "alternate start". :P

Luckly, I backed up my save prior to testing :)

I tried that tool just now. There were no scripts that began with a hash for me to delete, and when i clicked fix instances there were 0 fixed. when i checked the plugins drop down menu dawnguard was in there, so i tried pressing delete mod forms with that selected, but it doesnt remove dawnguard from the list. I also searched for dawnguard in the script list and deleted the two scripts that came up, but to no avail. Still crashes to desktop when i try to load the save file. Am I missing a step?

Its not that I don't want to buy dawnguard, but I'm saving to buy a car right now and buying videogames is at the bottom of my list of things i need, However i would like to be abel to play the games that i've already purchased in the past...
Lozzle Mar 26, 2014 @ 9:31am
If you're saving to buy a car...20 bucks is not going to set you back all that much unless you have nothing saved at the moment. If you're at all interested in Dawnguard, bite the bullet and buy it. Consider it an investment on a game you care about and are getting more content and new mods for it that require Dawnguard. Or just wait until it goes on sale again for 10 bucks...whenever that is.

holyshit people this is a consumer issue. What happenes next time steam makes a game free by accident or on purpose, and ruins your save files? there needs to be a way to stop this form happening, and yes 20 dollars does matter, im poor and every bit counts. this could happen to any game not just skyrim, stop telling me to buy something I have no intention of buying except for the fact that Steam destroyed a 200 hour save file. If that is their method of pushing DLC then ♥♥♥♥ THAT.
