Why so many mods? Friendly discussion :)
With all the troubles the mod community has been having for the past few days, it really got me thinking about how I approach the game and why I have the mods I have. When I first approached modding, I thought I'd limit myself to 25. Lol, then it ballooned to almost 100 a few months ago. That was with an Altmer mage who was pretty much Lord of the Universe. While he was fun for a while, he was the character that got me bored and I missed the vunerability that my first playthrough had. Playing him made me really think about what I really wanted in my game, and I started a whittling process. I got myself down to around 78 mods by the time the situation with Steam started and I lost a character build that I was rather fond of. Then I started thinking again about what I wanted in the game, and I was able to whittle down to 50. I'll say, I'm very happy with the game now. Things seem to be actually running smoother, and that's with 3 chunky "dlc" mods.

I guess my question to the forum is, why so many? Don't get me wrong, I completely sympathize with everyone and the least Steam could've done was post an announcement right here. I got burned too, but only with 28, there were people with 250 mods installed and that stinks. That being said, LOL, why do you need so many? Do you absolutely need all of them to still enjoy the game? And if so, is there a point where maybe perhaps you are not playing Skyrim anymore, but rather using its engine to play mods? There are people here who still greatly enjoy the Vanilla game. I just think it's very interesting that you can have this sort of contrast with how people approach the game. It is very much like Skyrim itself.

So if you have a ton of mods, speak up. Likewise if you have none or very few, speak up. I'm very curious. Please, DO NOT turn this to a "Steam vs Nexus" debate. This is not what this thread is about.

I have 64 "plugins", according to NMM, but a few of those are individual mods with multiple parts. I think maybe my number of mods is somewhere in the high forties, low fifties. There are a few other mods I like for different playstyles (e.g. if I'm playing a no-magic character then I can remove things like the mod which reinstates the earlier version of the -flesh spells so your character looks sort of like they're encased in transparant wood/stone/etc, if I'm playing a non-alchemist then I don't need the harvest overhaul...) but it's usually around this number.

I don't have a very good computer and I don't really expect to be able to use fancy graphics/location appearance enhancing mods, I don't have any interest in skimpy armours or ridiculously OP weapons, and basically I'm more interested in utilities (SkyUI, AFT, I guess I'd include Skyrim Unbound here, too) and things which influence the actual gameplay (SkyRe, Frostfall, RND, CCO) than things which make the game look nicer, because it already looks pretty awesome (aside from the aforementioned True Magic Armor VFX because I find the generic blue glow of vanilla quite offputting). Not that there's owt wrong with liking pretty cities and ladies in tiny clothes, I guess, it's just not my thing. (Well, not in a game.)

I havent played in probs a year or more, chose to get back into it today (of all days, rofl).
I reduced my mods from 60ish down to 45, checked what new ones were available (as it had been so long) which brought me back up to 71.
Then I spent an hour trying to figure out why the launcher wasn't updating my mods before I discovered the forums here...

To answer your question though, almost all of mine are graphic/sound/menu improvements and fixes than anything else because I <3 aesthetics.
I have a couple of houses, perk changes, weapons and the new Midas magic but that's about it as far as gameplay mods go.

I only have a few mods.
I can understand why people would have over 250 mods.
The base game is very bland after all.
As someone once told me:
Skyrim is a large as a ociance but as deep as a puddle.
It doesnt take long to get bored with the limeted options we have.

The mods i use are:
True dovahkinn power.
Life a other life.
Be a milk drinker.
Skyrim ui.
The dlc's.
Faster horses.
Basic mods that fix the base games issus.
Got a few more.
But cant recall them at this moment.

Unlike you i dont get bored of being lord of the universe.
Instead i feel guilty for being overpowered.
That hardets part of skyrim for me is not to:
~ tgm.
player.additem ######
player.addskills. ######
player.modav. ######
Etc.

I like being a dimigod.
But i feel guilty for winning without the enemy having a chance.

We don't disagree all that much. While I liked being powerful, I, like you, wanted to give my enemies a fair shot, so out went a lot of the mods that would help me. Before my mindset was to get the battle over with as quick as possible, now my mindset is to extend it for as long as possible and still be victorious. I think the philosophy change has helped me enjoy the game a ton more, that and the Better AI mod. No, dragons and such are no longer one-shotted, but boy are the epic battles fun. An error on my part and it is all over. Go unprepared, and it is all over.

I also like questing and hate leveling up by grinding. I have never used console commands. Lol, I know it's something with the ~

Fixes (Unoffical Patches) and Quality of Life improvements (Open Cities, Dugeons sounds, Complete Skyforge and whatnot)

Followed by replacing what Bethesda took out (Hand to Hand/Unarmed, Bound Armor)

I just use 2:
-SkyUI (for the functionality)
-One that changes the Fus Ro Dah audio to match the trailer, along with the music (because it's ♥♥♥♥ing baws)

Lol, I should answer myself. I have the three big dlcs from steam (Northern encounters, Moonpath, and Wyrmstooth). I have a nice rig for this game, so there are texture and graphic enhancement mods, and they actually form the bulk of the 50. Sunrise over the Sea of Ghosts with Project Reality is something to truly behold. Sunset at Whiterun is stunning. Fighting dragons at the college during a blinding snowstorm is... priceless.

I've included a few minor fixes to the Vanilla and Dragonborn homes, and one of Elianora's lovely homes. There are some tweaks to horseys, cooking, allowing circlets to be worn with hoods and helms, and have a few light tweaks with regard to smithing (Grinding to arcane is a PITA). I like dragons so I've made them harder, and put more in the game. Finally, I removed the leveling from leveled items. IMO, it renders a few items that I like using useless unless I wait to level 46. Why would I want to grind until reach level 46, then do quests? Nah, not for me. I'm questing from level 1, even if I suck at it. I've given myself more loot from Boss chests, who doesn't deserve MORE loot? I've made merchants a bit richer. Finally, I have a mod that gives me perk points in the form of harvestable dragon blood. I still gotta kill the dragons to get it, but since I have slowed down leveling by 2x, by the time I hit 50, my skills are very high and I deserve some perks.

I'm a noobity noob noob when it comes to games so the UI doesn't bother me. Nor am I bothered by some of the bugs. I didn't have many of them. Lucky me. If you must know, I play on pc with controller cause my wrists already see too much typing at work.

Is that done with a mod? I'm using Realistic Needs and Diseases* and am about to marry my follower, so even with followers kill-stealing I'm levelling kind of ridiculously fast. I guess it will slow down when I get to a high enough level, but I'd like to slow it down a bit now (probably should look for an alt birth stone thing, I think I picked one of the Guardian Stones near the start...)

*doesn't give any special levelling bonuses, but forces me to sleep every night which gives the Well Rested/Rested bonus which does speed up increases, I think?

Well rested bonus = 15%.

What's this about the modding community having troubles? What'd I miss?

Yuppity yup yup, a mod. I like early gameplay quite a bit, love being squishy, so I slowed things down. Here's the mod.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=121975241

It allows me to train my allotted amount per level (I only use the Vanilla 5) and use skills more per level. Geez, before, I'd disenchant like one stupid and I'd go up a level. No more. Now I gotta work a bit harder and when I get to level 50 and beyond, I gotta work super hard per level. Lots of combat and stuff. Lol, I even become a werewolf to avoid rested bonuses.

I am hardcore in my own little noob way. Lol, I don't have any of the Realstic mods. I think they're great, I just don't need them. I'd probably do ok with them though as I do sleep and cook regularly. It's been a part of my gameplay from the beginning.

I prefer 1/2 as fast leveling as opposed to twice as slow. Something to do with semantics.
Draaf fah Hahlor Mar 21 @ 4:13am
I don't use mods, i'm sure there are others like me out there, at least i hope so, otherwise i'm all alone boohoohoo... :(

I mostly like the fact that RND adds extra recipes so it's not just cabbage/potato soup, cabbage/potato soup... Also it stops foods from restoring 10 or however many HP which I like, although a fair few of the stews also keep the nice stamina regen thing that venison stew has in vanilla (which I also like!)

Same, actually! Still, I'll check out the mod (although I suspect I'll end up getting annoyed with it when I'm stuck somewhere in the mid 40s with a billion perks I desperately want thanks to SkyRe...)
