Can't absorb souls (No patches)
I have encountered a dragon whose soul I cannot absorb, and it's really bothering me. I've searched for solutions, but almost every other person with this problem had it because of Unofficial Patches and something about the order of installations. My problem is that I never had any of these patches to begin with, so this solution doesn't work for me. I don't know what to do! There's not a limit on souls you can carry, right? And no, although I have started the DragonBorn quest, I have not ventured to Solstheim and encountered Miraak yet, so I don't think that's part of the problem.

IF you have DLC's you need unofficial patches, they must placed in load order followering their respective ESM's. (Note some respawn dragons will not give souls if you have killed them in area not to long ago in the game, let a few days go by before going back)

Do you have *other* mods installed?

Failsafe solution (as in, it's worked every time I've needed it to):

Replace the soul script with one that works.

Once such place to find a working script is here: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/31685/?

In the "vanilla" game, no DLCs/mods, dragons from certain repeated areas, do not give up souls. i.e. "town guard-repeated dragon quests". At a certain point (in my pc game), alot of
fast travel to locations results in encounters with random dragons with collectable souls.
Once you've killed a quest "bounty" dragon, and gotten its soul, repeats at the same locals
do not give souls. Only the random (what i call-' fast travel encounter') or 'Late night/early morning standard/slow travel - random dragon encounters, result in aquiring a dragon soul.

If i come across a dragon while traveling i.e.: walking, riding horse, i engage it by using
dragon rend. Kill it, and it gives up a soul.

Not every dragon gives you a soul....

Ah, okay. Good to know. I do have all the DLCs. After hearing so much about the load order messing everything up I thought I would just avoid them altogether. Thank you! I'll make sure to get them and double check the load order.
And does that mean that I can still claim a soul of an already dead dragon if I've fixed the issue and return? That's badass! I was afraid it wouldn't work, so I went back to just before I encountered it, left my game there, and I haven't wanted to play since because I don't want to miss out on the soul if I can avoid it, but since I also saved it after slaying the dragon, that means I can save killing it again and again. Cool.

Nothing but nude mods (don't judge me), but all that does is add meshes for male and female models. I don't think it should effect dragons at all.

Cool! Would this be included in the unofficial patches anyway? Or would you recommend this instead? I doubt I should do both, since they would overlap. I don't know what else the patches fix, but I haven't encountered any other problems yet, so...

Okay, remember seeing a dragon when passing through before, but I don't remember if I avoided it to focus on my quest or if I actually slayed it. But you're saying it could be the same dragon just back again? Is that a thing in this game? If I killed it already, I wouldn't find its corpse again, right? As Kelvy suggested, the bodies don't despawn, so I should be able to find it again if, say, I did slay it once. So if I find the body of the first one, then this is a new dragon and this is a glitch, but if I don't find the first body, then this is the same dragon respawned and I shouldn't expect a soul. Okay, I think I got that.

if your problem persists, do what adura says.
It is not included in official patches, in fact, they can introduce this bug themselves.

Just replace that script and you are unbugged.
