Stones of Barenziah
I have got 23 of the 24 stones but have missed out on the Dark Brotherhood quest and so cannot get in to the DB Sanctuary (see previous discussion) Any suggestions ?
Re DB quest, I killed Grelob, have spoken to Maul who wont tell me anything, Tried murdering innocent people etc, all to no avail. I stuffed it earlier and cannot get back into that quest.
But re the Stones, am I stuffed if I cant get that last one ? No secret "spare" somewhere ?
P.S. How r u expected to find them all without cheating ?!!

When you killed Grelod, did you return to Aventus Auretino? If so, did you get a mysterious letter, and have you slept since then? (Lots of people never bother to sleep). Maul's nothing to do with the DB.

I guess you're expected to explore EVERYWHERE, I've never actually checked, is it possible to get access to them all without doing all the guilds/factions/whatever? I know you have to buy the fancypants house in Solitude, which seems a bit hinky to me.

You don't have to buy the house in Solitude, you can pickpocket the key. Not going to say who from thats a spoiler. ;)

Oh, I would never, EVER do that, nope. Just out of curiosity, though, I might investigate that... Although it does bother me that you have to join the Thieves' Guild to get the stones valued, not that I've ever picked up more than about five or six of the things. I'd like to do them on this playthrough (it's going to be a pretty big one, I think) but I don't really want to go even that short way along the TG path (and I like Keerava, it makes me sad to have her and Talen angry with me.)

Heres a solution to the problem, get all the stones, then go do the bit of TG you need to get them valued and also to get the final part, the reward is quite good. Then abandon the TG quest.
If you are really desperate, just use the console.

Yeah use the console, it's so much easier than actually getting the job done !!!!!

Well, yeah, as I said/implied, I know you can do that, but it's not really a solution, given some characters would never join the TG or help them by intimidating local shopkeepers, but would be intrigued by the unusual gems they keep finding. I'm not saying you ought to be able to do every single thing on one character, but given this particular quest is one to do when you're doing a pretty full playthrough, and I'm more inclined to do that with a character with some sense of decency, it's a pity the only person who can tell you about the stones won't do so without you joining the TG (esp given Delvin helps you with another guild's quest without joining).

I can see your point, i don't like the set up either, and at the very least your going to drop poor brand shei in the pooh. Alas tis the only way. unless someone knows a better way without using a mod.

This quest must be difficult to complete since the reward is really big.

Many gems are OWNED by npcs, so if your char does not want to steal he/she shouldn't get involved in the quest. The fact that the quest can be accessed only by becoming a member of the thief guild makes a lot of sense.

Also a lot of people complains that you can do everything with one char. Well, if you want the Crown of Barenziah you must be a thief :P

Fair enough, I suppose, as I say, I've only found a few of them (and haven't looked up where the rest are) but it still seems a bit odd that you have to throw your lot in with the TG just to find out what the thing is, when there's no indication up to that point that it's a thiefy quest? (Also, and I realise this is a bit meta-gamey, so far the ones I've come across in places where they seem to be owned are all marked as not-stealing if you take them.) I dunno, I totally agree there should be stuff that's off limits to certain characters, though, it just seems vaguely odd to have a quest which seems like it's meant for a main character/long playthrough in scope to be specifically limited to one particular playstyle, given how utterly not like that the rest of the game seems to be! I'm not even really complaining, it just surprises me.

Ok i've just been giving this some thought "harry my single braincell is not happy about this" but anyway, i think this a quest to see if your prepared to be just a little bit naughty. You know just naughty enough to get the reward, but maybe not naughty enough to go the whole way. btw on the subject of harry, he has problems when it comes to doing more than one task at a time, like thinking and breathing. ;)
