Rename a character....
Hello every one, I would like to know if there is a way to rename a character, ie have a dog name your dog duh! I would, if possible, to give it a decent name, or my horse give it a name other than your horse? Thank you for your input...

as far as I'm aware, you can't dynamically change NPC names in-game. =/

But then again, I never tried to put such a feature in a mod. *shrug* maybe I'm mistaken ^^

Yeah..I'd like to be able to name my horses(the ones that survive) and dogs...Such a common feature in so many other games, I was rather surprised not to see it in Skyrim.

To rename npc characters you can use the Creation Kit but its a process, you must know what you're doing.

Dud! I can barely make a house(more like a shack, lol, won't even put my dog inside, lololol). But somewhere in the Realm of Skyrim gourous someone must be able to come up with a simple mod, maybe, and by the same token maybe get them to follow simple orders like sit, quite (stop barking), hunt (for their food), attack (defend) etc...Just like regular dogs... Just an idea, push it around maybe just maybe it will be heard and done...
Thank you......

There's a way to change names in the console, but it only changes it for dialogue I believe.

Would that not create a problem when you download a mod that alters that particular NPC? If you change for example "Aela" to "Jasmine" would a mod that specifically alters Aela be in conflict to that name change? It would not change the facegen data or anything but could it mess up say a quest mod with Aela in it?

I don't understand why they never gave you the option to rename your pets. I mean, who likes a dog that is named 'Dog' or a horse named 'Horse'?!

Hi! Hmm. My guess would be Tarzan. Even though his Chimpanzee was named, "Cheetah", his son, in the Johnny Weismuller movies anyway, was named, "Boy".

Hello, I think you did not understand my point...The purpose of renaming are for DOGS, HORSES or other pets, the rest of the NPCs would remain with same name...
Thank you

Hi, Michael! Do you mean that he called you "Boy" rather than "Michael"? My condolences about the loss of your father. I lost my mother when I was 4. But anyway, Movie Tarzan actually named his son, "Boy". Comics Tarzan's son though, was named, "Korak".

Editing names in the Creation Kit is actually not that hard or risky. The NPC's name that we see in-game is not the same as its ID. Therefore, we could change Aela to Jasmine without problems by editing her Name field but not her ID field, since all game logic will reference her ID. Of course, dialogue will still use her original name, so this is a silly example.

The same goes for any dogs or horses that you may want to rename. Of course, this will apply to any instance of that creature. If you change "Stray Dog"'s name to Spot, all stray dogs will show up as spot.

Dynamically altering names is harder. I do not know of a way to do that.

Thanks Copper! :)

Keep in mind that if you have mods that change what you change, there still may be problems, but given that you're only altering a single, generally independent field there shouldn't be any problems. At worst your change overwrites or is overwritten by another mod.

Always excercise caution when modding.

Hi! Oh, hey, there was something I forgot, for I was thinking it was related to "Oblivion", but no, it is related to "Skyrim". There is a tool that you can get call, "Skyrim NPC Editor". It allows you to edit NPCs in such a way, that you're creating your own to add to the game world. Look for it, as it may be what you are looking for. ;-)
