Followers misbehaving...
So, I'm currently playing with AFT enabled, none of my other mods *ought* to alter follower behaviour, although, you know, who knows sometimes. I've used AFT for ages with no problems (other than it possibly messing up someting with INPCs, but I've not used that lately) and I haven't added any new mods since starting this character yesterday. I had Meeko pretty much from the start, had no problems. Bought a horse in Riften, had no problems. Headed to Riverwood and befriended Faendal, problems start. Nothing enormous, but unnerving and suggestive of Worse To Come.

First, more or less as soon as Faendal joined me (which, AFAIK even in vanilla you can have a human + a dog follower?) Meeko refused to follow for quite a while, went through dismissing/re-enlisting a few times, nothing helped, luckily reloading a slightly earlier save seemed to bypass whatever the issue was. So, fine, okay.

Second thing, I take advantage of AFT's default setting of followers not dying if they run in front of your sodding bow, yet after finishing off the last bandit in Embershard I wander up the path to loot the swine and find... Faendal's body. Don't think I even hit him, although maybe I did, but anyway, he's somehow died even though he should be immortal. I must admit I was lazy and console resurrected him rather than reloading, but I'm sure I've done that before with no issues (pre-AFT follower immortality). Guy seems fine, so, okay, head back to Riverwood (where I, erm, get an inheritance letter as apparently my dear friend Faendal has died...) and tell Faendal it's time to part ways as I'm off to Whiterun for the night. Look around to check Meeko's following and Faendal hops on my horse! Re-enlist him and make him stand away from the horse, part ways again, he gets right back in the saddle. (Eventually I made him stand way further from the horse and sprinted to it when I dismissed him, which worked).

Anyway, TL;DR version, followers are being odd, help!

I've asterisked the most recently-added mods, the Fine Goods from Morrowind one is a little glitchy appearance wise but I've been playing with even the new ones for a few days (I play quite a lot because Reasons) although I guess I didn't have much in the way of followers in that time. I'm not massively attached to this character, although I'd like to get to the goal I've set for her (own a house based mainly on doing 'mundane' work type stuff rather than going round looting stuff - Embershard being the exception because I have to do it to get Lakeview) but if I have to restart, I'll cope.

Oh, and I use BOSS and everything's been cleaned that ought to be. I do look out for conflicts mentioned on mod pages, although I must admit I've never quite made sense of TES5Edit's colour coding and stuff to work out when it's trying to tell me there are conflicts, so I could be missing something there.

Ack, got Rayya, in the Bee and Barb she wouldn't rejoin me properly (i.e. I clicked on the appropriate options and it seemed fine but she just started walking away) and I got an error message to the effect that she was an 'unrecognised follower' and had I added her as a follower since installing AFT? (Which, yes, but that's sort of normal, no?)

I've finished that playthrough now, so I've disabled the mods I've asterisked above, but I'm sort of nervous about keeping AFT on, as I want to start a longer playthrough, and I don't want to have more problems with it.

Wondering if UFO is worth a try, or whether it's better to stick with the devil I know? I'd used it for ages without problems, except when I tried having Interesting NPCs a month or so ago. Main things I like about AFT is followers carrying more, relaxing rather than standing to attention staring at me while I do stuff, and being a bit better at stealth (not setting off traps, for a start).

When a follower misbehaves I use AFT "actions" and "summon/follow" and it seems to reset whatever script is running. Your original post about your follower mounting your horse would be one example where a "summon/follow" should work in correcting the behaviour. Also great for retrieving lost/trapped/stuck followers when you only have to locate one and issue the command. There are also the remote commands which are handy.
Personally I love AFT and the "never initiate combat" certainly helps with sneaking (especially with AFT "stealth" mode). It also aids in restraining Lydia's propensity to dash ahead into battle.
Soooo, I wouldn't give up on AFT just don't install "Interesting NPC's" even with the patch it seems to bug out AFT eventually.
BTW, I also like the camp feature.

Yeah, I haven't had INPCs for ages, shame as I really liked it. I've uninstalled everything I've had less than about a week and I'm going to do a fresh install of AFT, I'll bear the summon/follow thing in mind if it happens again, thanks! I'm actually intending to jolly well finish the main quest on this character, so obv I would rather it not bug out halfway through! I always forget about the camp thing, because usually by the time I've picked up a follower, I've bought a Frostfall tent from a merchant.

Now I just have to decide whether I want a male character just to be able to use the pumping iron mod (I know/presume you can still use it on female characters, but the difference from one end of the weight scale to the other is so minimal, I'm not sure it's worth it! I pretty much always go with the high end of the scale anyway).
