I have very hard time to believe that. Overhauls have shown us how much planning, dialogue and code were made for Skyrim, but was never included with the game. Bethesda clearly has stories and resources, but they were lacking faith, time and engine to finish this product.
What about the "engine?" Skyrim was made for consoles, not for PC. We have a luxury of space, enginepower and freedom, but CG does not. They made a choise between sandbox and full story and made 50-50 choise for CG.
The succes of Skyrim might encourage them to add more content to their next possible release. It will most likely be a CG version, so ratio between content, visuals and sandbox surroundings will be decided with that in mind. Again.
Edit
And why was TESO pulled in the middle of this? They have given license to create an MMO for TES surroundings, but otherwise Bethesda has 0 take on it.
Morrowind: Most content is short and quick. "Go fetch item from two-room tomb inhabited by three bonewalkers". You can do most quests in five minutes (discounting travel time). I even hate to call them quests, they're really just tasks. There are exceptions of course, especially in the main storyline, but by and large they're menial tasks.
Oblivion: Much larger content, although there's still a lot of tasks. Unfortunately a lot of the content is monotonous due to cut-n-paste dungeons and caves. "But that's just the environment," I hear you say. True, but environment is part of the content. Story is more then just the who and why, it also includes the what and where. A lot of the quests really felt like boilerplate (got talk to daedric statue, do task, return to be rewarded with artifact).
Skyrim: Similar in scope to Oblivion, but with far less monotony. Yeah, the nordic ruins do get old after a while, but it takes longer to reach that point. There are still quickie tasks, but they tend to be the exception, not the rule. Most quests take a while to finish, with some taking an entire evening if you don't rush them through.
you can see this clearly when looking at the game scripts, they planned a whole lot more with the civil war. Dynamic battles and everything. There even is a mod that partly restores it as Bethesda scrapped it and put in static battles.
I guess the same went down with guilds, they didnt get to finish everything.
Im ok with it, content like quests can be modded easily, having a good engine and good combat is much harder to mod by players.
I see people say that Skyrim was the last game in the series, but thats just BS. Skyrim was one of the best selling and recieved games ever made.ESO is made by a different company.
Bethesda earned a lot of money with Skyrim, im certain they will make the next ES game even better.
I guess it just depends on how you look at the content. Yes, the fetch-and-carry quests of Morrowind and Oblivion are less involved than those of Skyrim, but Skyrim's main quest is a quickie compared to Morrowind's (and Oblivion's main quest can infamously be completed in under an hour, of course.) Personally, I think the games need to be viewed as an organic whole - how do they naturally play through while doing a reasonable number of side quests, faction quests, and tangents? Obviously much of this is going to depend on player preferences. Mine are for the epic style of Morrowind. But Skyrim's repeat playability makes it very worthwhile. Oblivion, sadly, still falls short, due to the monotony you mentioned, and the fact that it feels very lonely to me.
I'm calling BS on this, pure fiction.
The Skyrim world size is smaller and yes, it has less depth in my opinion.
Unfortunately the endless increase in polygon counts means that something else has to be sacrificed, as everything comes back to budget.
My opinion on ESO is that they had all this experience making open world 'big' games that the logical next step was online. I'm hopeful of another elder scrolls from Bethesda given that its sister company is making it, so Bethesda should be free to make TES6. Hopefully
I wouldn't by any rights say I rushed them. Im not going to say I did them 100% either. I am currently playing through morrowind to finish it up and then going to oblivion to finish it up. I should have been more specific in my "played through." Whether you rush them or not compared to Arena or Daggerfall all 3 are short (that however is not a factor in our discussion). Also, You have to take in consideration that I am a college student with way...... too much free time (can dedicate currently until exams come up about 10-12 hours a day on a game). Also having a strong memory some things come natural in knowing how to approach them less trial and error than an original play through. (By no means did I rush anything really powerful I followed the normal progression expected.) I can concede however, that morrowinds dungeons are... lacking and I thought that from its release especially with Daggerfall being the first game I ever played (thanks to my dad). Want to talk about quest that take you all night lets talk about dungeons that could take you days to clear out much less find your exit sometimes ha. My main comment atleast how I felt I worded it and it may not have come out that way was that oblivion and morrowind were just more overall immersive. But, we all have our opinions and each is respectable.
Also, to the person that said content and story creation would be an issue. I find that hard to believe. As TES:VI could take place at any point in Tamriels history for all I care it need not follow a progressive timeline. If you don't count Redguard (as was more a action adventure than an RPG in my opinion) and Arena (as it was the entire empire) the TES Franchise has only touched on High Rock, Skyrim, Cyrodiil, and honestly about half of Morrowind. That leaves, Black Marsh, Elsweyr, Valenwood, Summerset Isle, and Hammerfell they could even given they design it for PC could pull off another Arena style and incorporate all the provinces( TES:O is not an option as I want to be the one nameless hero not one of thousands. I also got my fill of MMOs after about 12 years on Everquest). Surely in Tamriel's long existance there has been more than 5 nameless heros. And, the new dragonborn in skyrim wouldn't be the last. Tamriel is in even more doo doo then they have ever been in my opinion as far as ther turmoil in Tamriel. If they got really out there Tamriel if I am not mistaken is just an Island country in an even greater world. I feel they have the fan base to bring TES to life such as Lord of the Rings is. Most people know the books but there is so much beyond just those books that was written. It truely is another world. This could be that way. Though they would have to want to do that and would at times probably have to sacrifice graphics for content but our systems are getting so advanced I fail to see how the capacity isn't there. I could be wrong though as I am not a programmer. Honestly, I know some wouldn't agree and I don't usually buy games brand new. But, If they could make a game with the content that is just incredible I would pay more then the current what 60$ for a new title. Anyway, thats me and its all opinion and everyones circumstance is different. I just long for a game that I could play for months and not beat, that at the end I have this immense satisfaction. At the end of Oblivion and Skyrim I was like... well... Uh... hmmm... Ok.
skyrim was pretty disapointing
its like the caves were too predictable
oh look a cave with a door with that same symbol - gunna fight dragaers and traps again :(
That would be Elder Scrolls Online. I'm pretty sure that VI will take place after the events of Skyrim.
