I need to know this! xD
I was attacked by some bounty hunters. They had a letter, which told them, to kill me. Signed by someone named Gerda.
Who knows who she is? Is this a quest?

Gerda is a Nord who works as a maid in Dragonsreach.

Did you steal from her?

Thanks for the quick answers!
I´ve never been to Dragonsreach before...

Gerdur is a Nord lumberjack in Riverwood. She runs the mill with her husband.

Are you sure it wasn't Gerdur?

As Bob says, Gerda works in Dragons Reach and should sleep in the Bannered Mare Inn. HAve you been helping yourself to stuff in the inn?

so who is it that hires the rubbish brotherhood assassin?
since we are talking about bountys on heads and all

Typically its because you stole something from someone's shop/home but didn't get caught.

Skyrim is full of psychics and remote-viewers and everyone hates crime - even the chickens will report you if they see you take something.

I don't know who does those - I think its supposed to be someone *inside* the brotherhood looking to get rid of you before you find out what's going on there.

Too bad for them - if they hadn't kept sending assassins after me I wouldn't have paid them any attention. Because they did I destroyed their org and the Brotherhood is no more.

The odd thing is that the person who signs those messages always act as nothing ever happened when you later talk to them - I mean, you can't even confront them about it. This seems especially odd with Astrid, who sends dark brotherhood assassins after you, until you later join the brotherhood yourself.

I can do one better. I was walking through Riverwood at night one time, and for no particular reason, I killed a chicken. A bounty was placed on my head, 5 gold or something. And then a few seconds later I got the message "Bounty removed. Last witness eliminated." The chicken reported its own murder.

My first playthrough I didn't entirely get how learning skills worked and figured as I was playing a thief I ought to steal stuff that was marked steal. I picked up everything from outside the blacksmith's house, it was nighttime so as far as I knew nobody saw me (I didn't spot the bounty notice). On my way back to the inn (didn't realise I was allowed to sleep at Gerdur's house) I happened to kill the chicken and got the notification that my bounty was lifted as the last witness was killed...

Well I don't pay that much attention ... I had it once that I was just outside Helgen and some dumbass from the dark brotherhood tried to kill me ... really I just fled from Helgen who the f**** I could possibly ♥♥♥♥ed of at that time?
