Best way to level up smithing?
It's a pain in the ♥♥♥♥ to level up. I'm making a ton of jewelry and dwarven/elven bows- but it's still slow as heck.

Buy your way up to 90, then finish off with bows, leather armor, jewelery, whatever works.

Iron daggers are a terrible way to level up. Experience is based on value and they're practically worthless. Not to mention there are far more worthwhile uses for iron.

I use bound bow, so can't really use it. Might be a good idea though.

@Jack

That glitch doesn't work anymore.

The way smithing works * without mods * is that the amount of exp you gain is directly connected to the amount of materials required, this takes into account the rarity of such materials as well. Until you reach the point that you can make scale and plate armors, I suggest making Leather Armor, it's going to give you the most bang for your buck early on, after that point, stick to crafting scale and plate until you can craft ebony, at that point just spam ebony boots and you should have no problem.

transmute iron ore to gold ore and make gold rings its the easiest.

If you have Hearthfire, making hinges, nails and other building materials works wonders for me.

Iron Daggers. Iron Daggers everywhere.
Personally I wish you'd get more XP for smithing stronger things like glass,ebony,dwarven as opposed to smithing weaker things like iron, steel, etc. Kind of immersion breaking that you learn the same amount of stuff crafting a legendary armor set as you would by making dinky ddaggers.

This.

You can find the book to learn the spell at the Halted Steam Camp near Whiterun.

This is no longer true.

Thirded.

A good supply of diamonds, emeralds and flawless diamonds will make leveling smithing even faster since the value of the item contributes directly to skill gain. If you've done the Stones of Barenziah quest, then gems will no doubt be plentiful.

If you have 15% increased price plus 50 speech you can sell iron arrows for 1 each and profit from fast traveling to every city with a blacksmith and buying their iron ingots, since most cities are 12 hours away the first blacksmith you visited (and so forth) will always have their trade goods replenishe; this will require you to do an hour grinding session including chopping firewood.

Or you could get trained in Blacksmithing (most notably Balimund up to expert) and pickpocket the gold back, leveling your character up every couple of times you pickpocket (assuming your pickpocketing is not 100) and train in smithing should you have your pickpocketing level and perks sufficient to be able to steal the gold.

@Neigh

I've only pickpocketed once so far. Doubt I can do it.
