How to start a new char
I have over 2000 saves with my first char and when I try to load back to the beginning to start a new char it only goes back to save 997. How do I go back to beginning so I can create a new char?

Hit "new game" on the main menu instead of "load game."

There is no option for new game on main menu. Just Play, Options, Data Files, Tech Support and Exit - I'm playing on a PC by the way. I have been reading up on this prob and it sems game has overwritten a new char I started at about Save 997. I'm pretty dumb about computers and don't understand most of what I'm reading to be honest. But seems there is no way around this - I'd even go buy a new game if it mean I could start a new char but I don't know how you get around Steam giving you new saves from scratch on a new game.

why don't you turn off steam cloud . backup your saves to another folder. then delete them and , start a new game. You'll stilll have all your saves . You'll just have to put them back in the proper folder when you wan to play your previous character. why do you need 2000 saves with one charcter anyway ?

Do you have a real copy of Skyrim? Because if "New Game" isn't there, then something is seriously wrong.

just open up the saves folder and delete say... 400 to 1500 worth
you may think theyre of use, but, theyre not

Do you use any mods that modifies the user interface or main menu in ANY way? If yes, try removing them. I'd also recommend deleting some of your save games, there is no need to make new save games over and over again. Personally I keep the number relatively low, no need to make a new file every time, I only make new files when I'm about to join a new guild or hit a crossroad where there is no return....
It should just say

The fact that you mentioned data files leads me to believe that you are looking at the launcher. On the menu that's mostly black with the big dragon logo, you should have the options listed above.

Failing that, download and load this save

The main menu *in-game*, not on the launcher.

Many thanks for all your responses - duh! Just found 'New' option to start a new game! lol! All this time and I'd never noticed it before. I'm a happy bunny now! Again thank you so much for your help xxx Its first time I've played a game on Steam where you have saved games and I shall keep my saved games down to a minimum now I know better :)

Well, you had to have noticed it at least *once* before.

No I started a new char ages ago by going back to first game before it all got overwritten.

I mean you had to have clicked on 'New' to start that very first ever character.
