Give me suggestions on HOUSE FEATURES!
Ok, so I'm making a house mod, and I'm nearly finished. But it feels like I'm missing something, could somebody give me some suggestions on what features the house should have?

Kinda hard to give suggestions if we haven't seen the house, but I am fond of armor mannequins and weapon racks...there never seems to be enough of them lol

Don't know about you but i love me a good guest room for my trusty followers, as it seems quite a lot of house mods seem to forget them, or just don't care

I like some sort of requirement to get access to the house - not necessarily anything big, but e.g. the Courier showing up with a letter of inheritance/a letter asking you to take care of someone's home while they're travelling to Cyrodiil or something after you've levelled up once or twice after installing the mod? No idea how difficult that would be, mind!

Automated sorting system for your items is always a plus for the user. I recommend adding in an entirely new area for the house however, this will make sure that it doesn't cause issues for people not using the memory patch and will keep memory heaps low for ENB users.

Ok, I appreciate the feedback! I'll see what I can do! Now, I would like to point out though, that the house is really small (3 rooms), and I would like to keep it kinda small.

Ah, I might be interested in that, then, I understand why huge house mods are popular, but personally I like somewhere a bit more cosy!

We can't tell you what you're missing if you don't tell us what you already have

Ok then, as I said, the house only consists of 3 rooms (2 cells), The main room, a basement and a guest room in the basement (I'm willing to expand on these, if I've missed something essential).
The house has 2 beds (1 in the main room, and the other in the guest room), an alchemy and enchanting station, cooking pot, 1 display-case, 1 mannequin and 2 weapon plaques, and an anvil. There are also various containers inside.

And outside there's a forge, smelter, workbench, grindstone, tanning-rack, chopping block, some training-dummies, a fishing-hatchery and 2 apiarys (The mod will require the Hearthfire DLC, however I'm planning on making a standalone version)

To get to the house, you will need to take a boat to it, which can also take you to other various locations around the lake that the house will be located. (I do not want to spoil anything)

And that's exactly what I'm going for! :)

Bookshelves. Don't forget bookshelves and ones that are compatible with the Unlimited bookshelves mod. Lol, it's not necessarily the amount of containers that you have, but where they are placed that often makes a huge difference between me using a house or not. One of my favorite all time housing mods is s70's the Humblest Hut. It is smaller than the majority of the houses, tiny in fact, yet has all the crafting. He took the time to place storage very carefully, especially with the ridiculously limited space. To enchant, I don't want to run across to another room to get my soul gems and potions, they should be right there. The best houses are not the biggest houses, but the houses that are the easiest to use. Lupus's Riverside Lodge with sauna is another standout house that features excellent storage and navigation and it's only a bit bigger than your planned home. Including a quest to get the house is also a plus, or at the very least, make it available for purchase. Not a crazy quest that's impossible, something a starting character will feel good about completing, but won't make him/her abandon the house. I'm not a fan of free houses.

One thing I really liked about the Hobbiton House mod was that it had labelled storage, though I suppose that might annoy some people, but I really liked having one chest marked enchanting supplies, one marked alchemy supplies, etc. Possibly a general one marked "stash" by the door, and maybe another marked "travel supplies"?

That sounds cool! I might think about that, but as you said it might annoy people...

Thank you for the good advice, I really appreciate it :). I'll put what you said in mind while I keep making the house!

While I'm at this, how many of you have the Hearthfire DLC?
Draughir 24 feb, 2014 @ 17:21
I personally am a huge fan of labelled storage. Being a pixel packrat, it does two things for me: A: The obvious, gives me a marked chest for specific items. B: Prevents me from unloading my entire inventory into one chest and forgetting what's in there.

I have hearthfire too, by the by.

And yes, sensibly placed storage..for example I love the way the hearthfire smithy stations cellars are laid out. Chest right behind the forge. Turn. Oh look mats. Turn. Oh look, forge. Turn. well how bout that..there's a smelter right here..

I'd like to try my hand at designing a house, but the CK seems daunting to me. It seems really silly to me that you can't have any...hmmm..how to word this...That you can't put a library on the north wing...or a greenhouse on the east wing. There's three choices for each wing, each one uses the same exterior models..example...the enchanter's tower, the library and the alchemy tower all look the same, so why does the one on the west wing HAVE to be an enchanter's tower? Why can't I put the kitchen on the north wing instead? Or the bedrooms in the east wing etc...

Ok..I've completely digressed from the point of this thread. ..back on track now...I also agree that a small questline to get the house is nice too. It would also be nice to have a vendor (with enough gold) somewhere nearby...that's one of my favorite things about the whiterun house. It's right in between the smith and the general store. That and it's also just inside the city gates, which was quite helpful prior to the better fast travel mod.

Ok I think I've rambled quite enough now. Carry on! ;)
