1. Install SKSE v1.7 (not on the Workshop) it will eliminate a lot of CTD's.
2. Get BOSS (Better Oblivion Sorting Software (also not on the Workshop) to iron out load order issues after you install your mods.

I can't help too much with *Workshop mods* - Almost all the stuff I use comes from Skyrim Nexus.

Don't bother with Steam Workshop. A lot of the good mods are missing and some of them are not up to date.

Just head to http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/ and enjoy a vastly superior mod manager to Steam Workshop when it comes to dealing with Skyrim (and some other games).

Good idea to play vanilla game first for an extended length of time and then you have a better idea of what you would like in the way of mods. Nexus Mod Manager, better known ws NMM, BOSS, and BASH are all great tools to help you manage your mods. But always keep in mind that they are aids, none of them are infallible, There is no magic wand that you can wave and suddenly all your mods are in perfect order and you will never have another conflict. Contrary to the statements I have read at times in this forum.
