Best Follower
I used to use Lydia for quests but I've decided to make her my steward, was just wondering who are the strongest followers to get (not Dawnguard or Dragornborn DLC just the Skyrim base game). Any suggestions or is there a webpage that tells you the stats for each follower as that would be useful.

Killed him for the Deadric Artifact thing :o(. The steward I got at Morthul, Valdimar, seems pretty good, shoots ice bolts.

J'zargo, if you killed Erandur.

None, I keep getting into trouble as always, and they get themselves killed as always...

I like J'zargo, Valdimar is pretty good in a dungeon, although I never quite forgave him for vanishing while I was fighting two frost dragons, a bear and a Spriggan. (I'm sure the poor chap just got lost.) Inigo is great, best single mod follower I've tried, I also like some of the folk in Interesting NPCs. Marcurio's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥, but he's the only NPC I've met who doesn't call my dogs stupid, so I like him a bit for that.

Oh, and Amazing Follower Tweaks makes followers much more useful/bearable - lots of customisable options, defaults to them being essential, not setting off traps, etc. Can teach them new spells, make them vampires if you're one, etc.

Wait, If I haven't installed any unofficial skyrim patches, does it mean J'zargo has no level cap for me?

It says on the webpage above that J'zargo has no cap and levels up with your character (thats without mods). I think i'll switch to him, he sounds like a tough nut.

Cerwiden, Vilja or Inigo

I really like having Kharjo around... He's pretty good in a battle, even when you first get him.. Though he's starting to ♥♥♥♥ me off because no matter what I do, he wont use the awesome Daedric Bow I gave him.. He only uses his crap Hunting Bow. It's pretty hilarious when we get into a fight, and then one of the old women bystanders puts a red dot on my compass, and runs and hides begging for her life, and then Kharjo chases her down and brutally murders her as she crouching in fear.. Then of course when you approach him and ask him something he says "Khajiit got your back...." lol..

For the longest time, I was using Lydia, and she's pretty badass now, I guess she leveled up quite a bit from me using her so much. But I wanted a bit of change, so I built another house, this time in The Pale, and made her the Stewart, so when I dismiss her, she doesn't go all the way back to Breezehome... It's nice keeping your house carl a house carl and having someone else be stewart because that means there are two people there to defend your property. I actually brought up the console on Lydia, and made her and Gregor essential, because there's a giant camp RIGHT there. Also, Lydia and Gregor tend to patrol quite a ways away, and once I couldn't find Gregor until I went to the closest bandit Fort (the one you pass heading from Dawnstar to the property), and I saw Gregor there locked in battle with 4 bandits, he would get put down on his knee, and as soon as he's get enough health to get up, he'd get put right back down.. He would have literally been there forever if I hadn't come across him...

I also used Janessa, J'Zargo and Brelnya (spelling?), just to try them out.. I dig how Janessa addresses you when you intitiate conversation by saying "Yes sera?". J'Zargo is a bit of a puss, at least at his lower level before he levels up and for some reason ALWAYS winds up somehow attacking (accidentally) one of my two summoned Dremora Lords or Thralls, and they will get locked in battle.. Pretty hilarious to see J'Zargo cowaring in fear. Only to finally get back up and say "No more no more I submit!" as he sends Sparks at the closest Dremora Lord, lol...

The Companions are great cannonfodder, the mages of Winterhold are great cannonfodder, the hirelings are great cannonfodder, the housecarls are great cannonfodder, Serana is as annoying as could possibly be and not even great cannonfodder.... only notably effective follower I've had is Kharjo.

Agreed. Aside from Lydia, once she got in the groove of things, she was pretty decent at putting people down.. Though, she would STILL stand in doorways and trip traps. Though most followers do that anyway.
