Found my first follower dead!
So I had Erandur with me until I bought Lakeview Manor, then sent him home, thinking he was well-equipped and would have no great difficulty getting home on his own. I found out he was dead about two weeks later in-game when I tried to find him at Nightcaller Temple, had no luck and tried moveto player and was greeted with the sight of his dead body. I reloaded to just before I'd done that, and presumed he'd probably been killed by something nasty around the temple (like the three snow bears that attacked me when I went to look for him). Another week or so in-game, just went south of my house, killed a mudcrab, looked around to see if there were any more, and there was poor Erandur, lying face down where I suppose the damned crab must have killed him moments after he left me. I'm torn between feeling bad for him and wondering how on earth a pretty decent mage with a dwarven shield and an enchanted mace managed to lose a fight to the death with a crab!

(Oh, also, I don't really want dead bodies lying around in my pond, it freaks the kids out. Anything I can do to dispose of his corpse?)

eh ... such a sad and humiliating fate .. to die at the claws of a mudcrab.
1. You could resurrect him
console command while standing at his body = `Resurrect 1 <enter>`

As for doing something about a corpse, I don't know how it works for an npc that you married but when I've had to deal with the occasional bandit, I moved their body to a more inconspicuous spot nearby (down a hill into some bushes) or (into the nearby stream and let it wash downstream). But either way, the corpses tend to disappear in another day or so.
Can't have corpses clutting up our yard now, can we.

Bandit corpses seem to go away by themselves, but Erandur must have been there for about a month in-game, I suspect he's not going anywhere... There was also a dead 'worshipper' (who as far as I can tell should be by a shrine of Talos somewhere) next to my carriage for a few days, all most odd. I think if I select him in console and type 'disable' that should, erm, give him a nice burial *cough* right? (I'm tempted to resurrect him but it's not really something I can 'justify' in-game, my character's no necromancer, and I think perhaps he just couldn't live with the guilt of betraying his friends any more and let the mudcrab win :( He did go on about it a LOT.)

Must have been some self-loathing there for choosing such an ignominious death.. better to get baked/frozen by a dragon or wedgied by a giant.

He was probably attacked by of of those OP Mud crabs, the ones that can one shot you.

If you don’t want him to die, his continuing to live won’t glitch any quests (no quests require him to die), and you don’t mind a minor hack, use the Console to make him essential. To get his Base ID, open the Console and type:

help "Erandur"

Then verify his Base ID in UESP, get back in the game, open the Console, and use the ‘setessential’ command. Be sure to load a save when he’s still alive, first.

You can also use Ultimate Follower Overhaul[www.nexusmods.com] that allows you to make him essential without commands + change his initial gear.

IIRC, Amazing Follower Tweaks[www.nexusmods.com] does that also.

I have Amazing Follower Tweaks but I guess it only makes them essential while they're with you? I think I've set all the other people I like having as a follower as essential using console commands, but.. Yeah, not ideal. I've not tried UFO, I'll probably stick with AFT, but is there likely to be any major issues with switching between the two mid-game if I wanted to do so? (I currently have two followers 'active', Vilja (mod) and Marcurio (mercenary/student wizard from the Bee & Barb), if that makes a difference).

AFT allows you to set your followers as essential... just scroll through the tweaks. It also IMO, has fewer problems with other follower mods like Inigo.

I'm sure I looked and it only had them be essential while they're actually with me, but maybe I missed something, I like the look of UFO, but yeah, I'm quite enjoying Vilja (sadly for whatever reason my game and Inigo didn't get along, pity, he was pretty awesome) and don't want to have clashes... Touch wood she seems not to be making my game fall over as yet.

Geting rid of corpses that won't go away on their own.

1. Open console
2. Click on corpse
3. Type 'Disable'
4. Type 'MarkForDelete'

Disable makes the body invisible and un-interactable but doesn't get rid of it. Everytime the cell is loaded, the body will be also.
MarkForDelete tells the game to not load the body when the cell is next loaded.

Check AFT again and you will see it offers "Remote Tweaks". Listed under "Powers" in your menu. BTW, as I stated and users have commented AFT has fewer issues with mods like Inigo..I use AFT for that reason. Also, it appears modders might agree because they actually have posted fixes to allow their mod to work with Inigo whereas AFT does not need a fix.
As an aside.. I drag corpses on to city property and have noticed that after 10-30 in-game days they either get eaten by skivers (just guessing) but disappear.

It's your fault. You let him wallow in his own guilt and he pincered himself to death. SHAME.

Yup, that's why I'm sticking with AFT rather than investigating the shiny new mod further! If it ain't (noticeably) broke and all that.

I gave Erandur a nice Dwarven shield, he could have sold it to pay for therapy!
