Sure it is. There's a ton of history in skyrim. Have you not noticed the ten billion books full of lore lying around?
The story is actually quite impressive. Lets look at these key points in the story:

1. You're a prisoner at the start. What a delightful surprise!
2. You become the "Chosen One"! Oh, I love early plot twists!
3. You kill a dragon!
4. You are someone who is here to fullfill a prophecy! About killing dragons!
5. Oh there's like a civil war or something. Wonder what that's about. Would be great if when we pressed those options to participate that something substantial would actually happen. Must be DLC obviously. Or just a delayed patch.
6. Killed another dragon!
7. Found a temple which should help me kill dragons!
8. More dragons!
9. Went into the afterlife. To kill a really Big Dragon.

So as you can see, the story is actually very impressive. Once we locate the person who wrote it, who can't be more than 14 by now, we should formally congratulate them.
Lore rich and story rich are two different things. Its got the frameworks of a decent plot, but its never really fleshed out enough.

Please. You can do this childish reduction crap to anything. There are many, many stories within this game. It does have quite the backstory and a rich universe filled with detail due to the previous games. Sure, maybe the main storyline of you versus alduin is a little predictable and campy, but some of the other stories in the "smaller" side quests are quite well written.

Uh-huh. But this one wasn't really a "reduction". That's the problem.

But seriously though, I really don't want to "Dig" for my story. I don't mind reading about the history up to this point because I do that already. But even with the short quests and such (I spent a lot of time not doing the main story, which I always do with Elder-Scrolls games), the story was essentially: "Some great prophecy about alduin the devourer of worlds returning! We need a chosen one! K found one. Save us dragonborn!"

I mean, I get the mythology and the references, but they could've seriously took those references to real life religions and have turned it into something truley amazing. They didn't though.
The story, I'd consider, would be the Main Quest and Civil war, and maybe the guilds.
Main quest is campy and predictable, as it is with most Elderscrolls. But not that much a problem
Civil War is bland as hell, go to the camp and attack a fort/city, you now own the hold. No real twists or turns (Thats from a story perspective, its fun as hell from a gameplay one)
Compaions had a nice story, what little there was.
Mages guild, I dont know, never played much
DB was by far the best story in the game
Theives guild was meh

lol I was actually thinking about that actually. It's no better or worse than the previous games. I've just grown up and expected more. Still has rich lore but the actual story sucks.
Yeah, its by no means a bad game, its just not story rich as Valve seems to think it is.

Your 14 hours in my man, give it some time for the story to develop. I await your highly educated rebuttle. :falkwreath:
Thats on steam, I've got quite a bit of play time on PS3, having completed every guild (Except the mages guild, which I got bored of) and having my main be around level (I think, been awhile since I played) 80

The history is very intricate. What we actually get to experience in-game isn't, like at all. Back to the history though, oh the intrigue, diplomacy, mythology, and mystery surrounding the world.

I have played the others, though nothing pre-morrowind. The history and lore, as I've said, is great, but the story is not. Thats the story this game, and this game alone, tells, not the storys of the games that came before it.
The great thing about skyrim is its not pushed into your face at every turn like other games. Read the books found throughout the game to learn more or dont . its your choice. another reason to consider it open.

The books serve to make a very nice, detailed setting, telling you pretty much all there is to know about the world. No arguing that. They dont, however, tell an over-arching story for the most part, and are not the story of the game, just the setting. The very, very detailed and frankly amazing setting. The story would be, well, the story. The quests (The main quest(s) specifically)
