Game has forced me into negative action!
In doing Dragonborn, I had to join the Stormcloaks in order to be able to talk to Ulfric about the peace treaty. Then my main quest was Ulfric's war axe, but now I'm being forced to attack Whiterun, which is my home, and where I've been treated very well. Why the hell would I do that!?! Is there any way forward without having to attack Whiterun?

Nope. You are just taking over, not destroying it.

Surprise, War makes you do things you don't like.

Thanx guys. It's a bit of a let down tho. I think the Dev's could have come up with more options for my character, like talking the Jarl round, offering him some choices, or preferably allowing me to declare Whiterun neutral or somesuch. I'm a Nord, so I'm not about to side with the Empire and Thalmor, but it's Galmar Stone Fist who's running the rebellion, and he's a bit stupid and too gung-ho for my liking, and Ulfric needs to realise he's being manipulated. Maybe there's a plot twist about that yet to develope. I play mostly for story and immersion, and this twist just doesn't sit right with my character, but hey-ho, we gotta go where the Dev's say to go. :)

I think thats somethinig missing from most of the games today, to be able to play without having to kill somebody with an incredible banality. What if the story was: You live in Whiterun, then two groups start to fight each other and decide they will burn your house and kill your family. Thats also why i dont like horror movies or movies with excessive violence, thats a side of the human being that i wish never existed.

Well, i just did the Kinareth Temple quest.

Fisrt, i could not keep that Maurice guy alive : the first time, we were attached by hell dogs outside Whiterun : he and Lydia managed to fight each other and he lost.
Second, while wanting to pass by the tower, he got killed again by Lydia.
So, i evade the tower by the Giants camp, then i notice two spots on the map, but i rush back too late : Maurice was killed by 2 wolves.
Exit Maurice.

Then, after getting what needed in the sanctuary, i discovered that the two peacefull folks have been killed by Spriggans that spawned after my actions.

Is this a cruel world or what ?!

I ended up in this same situation with much the same thoughts as the OP. I simply didn't do the quest and held onto Ulfric's axe. I thought about trying to kill him or feed on him but i doubt the game would let me.

No matter which side you take you are basically forced to do something unsavery, so what I do is play out the war and then activate my Civil War Cleanup mod. For the most part nobody holds your choices against you.

If you can get Maurice to the sanctuary, then there are other options.

I seem to have missed something here. Who is Maurice and what does he have to do with the quest for the temple of Kinereth in Whiterun?

Edit: Nevermind, I just checked the Wiki and found the answer. Strange that I have done this quest several times and never came accross Maurice before.

You don't choose sides for the peace talks, this is for you to capture the dragon at dragonreach

Yes. Violence never lies. Survive or die. Skyrim is yours to take if you have the skill.

You don't actually have to join Ulfric. There's a way to break his seige.

Thanx all. Excellent feedback, as I now expect from the great community of Skyrimnuts! :)
I don't know anything about the Kinereth quest, but as I'm 3 missions into the war, I'm guessing I've missed that one. I'm quite interested in MealyDucards option, and have a save point after killing Alduin that I can restart from, so I just have to work out how to break Ulfric's seige, and maybe Kinereth might still be available. I'm at level 57 (from memory) and with such weapons and armor that I can virtually walk into these civil war battles with little challenge, and I have so much gold, and breezehome stacked to the rafters with loot (most of which is high value) that I only take V high value loot now, so the game is lacking some interest for me at present. I'd like to carry on the Atherium Shards quest, but it won't let me yet. I've got the Sepulcher quest to finish, but the skeleton key is a bit too good to hand back yet. My main point is that much as I luv Bethesda games, they've always been short on dialogue options and real character interaction. If they concentrated on developing that element, with their open world feel, they'd have a real winner in my book. I'm hoping Witcher 3 will fill those criteria, so Bethesda need to up their game. Now, I'm off to research how to break Ulfric's seige. :)
