First-person friendly?
As asked in the title, I'm wondering if this game is first-person friendly out of box. My wife's gaming experience is pretty much limited to Everquest and Everquest 2. At least in Everquest, most people are probably still playing in first-person. She doesn't care for over-the-shoulder view. I realize there may be mods that can accomplish a semi-decent gaming experience in first-person, but if that view is supported and encouraged out of box, I imagine things would be much better. Thank you in advance for any answers and feedback.

I play almost entirely in first person, and so do lots of people. I find it easier to aim with ranged weapons/magic, and while some people prefer third person for melee (as you can see more of your surroundings) I find it horribly confusing and I lose any semblance of co-ordination, so I don't really bother with it. I sometimes go into third person when my character is strolling around safe areas, and sometimes for a few seconds if I'm sneaking and want to be sure I don't miss any lurking baddies, but that's about it.

@gnewna: Thanks for the quick reply. I suppose lots of people might consider over-the-shoulder view first-person anymore. Is that what you mean or do you mean where you're actually looking through the character's eyes? I'm hoping for the later. Also, to mobs frequently try to flank you during combat? This might be why so many games don't support first person anymore. Can you scroll from first-person to over-the-shoulder view by scrolling the mouse wheel?

Worry not! The game defaults to first-person, and it is almost always the easiest way to play.

You're looking through your character's eyes. and yes, you can simply switch between first and third person view by scrolling the mouse wheel

First-person is viewing through the character's eyes, yes. Also, I never feel the need to switch to third-person during combat. If I'm being attacked from behind, I just turn around. :D I think camera mode is switched by pressing "C" on the keyboard, or clicking the right stick of a gamepad.

Yup, I mean first person, where all you can see of your character is their forearms and hands when you raise your weapon/spells.

Geeeeeenerally speaking, I don't think the vanilla enemy AI includes a lot of flanking, it's a while since I've played without SkyRe or another mod which influences that, though. Usually I think in vanilla they just come at you more or less one at a time, maybe two right in front of you? Occasionally I think you might get another show up at your side/behind you, but I think that generally only happens if you kind of blunder into the middle of a bunch of enemies.

First or third person this game is amazing

You can do it in first person - but outside the bow you have better control of the fighting in 3rd (can better judge how close you are to the target for dodging/hitting and better awareness of your surroundings).

However - the default FOV is something like 65 degrees. I would reccommend editing the .ini to widen that for a more comfortable experience. Unless you're playing on a tv on the other side of the room, this sort of consolified viewport is fustrating.

Plus - increasing the FOV will reduce the *ridonkulous* amount of screen real-estate your arms take up in 1stP. Seriously, hold both your hands up to the side of your head, palms facing you. Now move them about 6 inches forward of your face. That's the default 1stP viewpoint.

They will flank you when outdoors in the wilds a lot more, but in dungeons/crypts they sorta come at you from the front. Unless you happen to blunder into the middle of a room of draugr that activate all at once and come from their side-wall crypts. Especially at the end of that one final fight in Dustman's Cairn, where the spawn several times, where about 3 will gang up on you at one time. It just depends on where you are, really.

I don't have any problem with the default FOV and dislike intensely being in 3rd person.
You'll occasionally get attacked from behind if you run past an animal and it chases you.

Your wife should do just fine.

I almost always play in 1st person. But with an animation mod I have I go into 3rd person just to see the awesome way my character puts away his sword.
you can pretty much go through the hole game in first person if you wish i do in fact i find it hard to do any thing in the the 3rd person mode i guess i am old fashioned

I would have to agree with the first reply. The game is indeed first person friendly. Like the first person to comment, I find distance attacks are easier in 1st person. *MY* preference for melee is to switch to 3rd person though. NPC AI always make them dance around like WOW rogues on crack, so I find I can react faster in 3rd person. It's mostly pactice and personal preference though

Also, you may want to check out the Joy of Perspective mod for her. Not my mod btw, lol. It makes the 1st person view more immersive. You'll even see your character's body when you look down just like you'd see yours IRL.
