Free Food?
So what's the deal? A farmer is busily tending his crops and I come up and harvest everything he's growing with the city guard watching, and everyone is happy. NPCs have barrels of free food outside their houses. Why is this not considered stealing? I'm not a serious role-player but this does seem out of place to me. I like to cook and do alchemy, and I was having a hard time finding enough salt til I figured out that no one minded me raiding their stores. I could see this if I were playing novice level, but come on.

Yea really I wondered myself why that isn't stealing, but hey ... it's skyrim where more weird stuff is going on

Im guessing you're supposed to pick the crops and sell them to the farmers. Since you pick the crops, which if it wasnt skyrim would be hard work, you get paid for picking them.
Apparently the barrels around the towns contains refuse as Hilde (Svens mother) so nicely put it when I was looting them...
If you take from inside peoples houses, you're probably their friend.

Selling crops is actually a side quest put towards becomeing a thane as is selling ore to the mine owners. the fact that you can pick their crops without selling to them is stupid but you are not going to get rich stealing potattoes and eating them will not heal you from dragon attacks so pick away if you want to.

Well, the fact that the farmers pay you to pick their crops they've already raised is weird. And I agree like if you kill a cow or chicken it's murder and you get fined. But if you pick crops it's okay??? Makes no sense

Maybe so however lots of potatoes, cabbages, etc lying around in bandit camps so ... it makes no sense in that regard. However it's a weird game so don't pay attention to it.... and wheat is damn handy for making health potions.

Well, crops have a fixed price. If you sell crops to other then farmers you will get less gold or nothing at all for certain ones.

How is it "weird"? That is what they are supposed to do. Though, you usually talk to them first, if you want to work for them and pick their crops. However, they will also buy food that you didn't pick there, hence the way the dialogue works. They probably couldn't program it to be more "life like". Though, eating off the land, as a single individual, as opposed to being part of a party, isn't thought of the same way, as if a non-family group did it, like say soldiers.

Ever have a dispute with a neighbor about backyard fruit trees, with limbs that go over the fence? But there are also commune and community gardens.

So, actually, it isn't that odd. However, livestock, is another legal matter entirely.

People tend to be more lenient if you take food to avoid starvation, then they are if you steal money to buy the food, though some will say, "Pood dear, all you had to do was ask me and I would feed you!", as per manners, customs, and ettiquette, and traditions.

My favorite thing that makes no sense, is that I will take and then eat cabbage from a tomb that's supposedly been sealed away for many years. Must be the cold, excellent preservation.

i am guessing the theory is that a beginner player will get killed if they stumble into the cave or tomb that is too advanced. you can hit the inventory button and eat your entire contents (lots of potatoes at 1 pt heal after awhile) if desired in get your health back up instead of dieing over and over and becoming bored with the game.

i only pick up gems and jewelry now myself but there is no one to sell them to. i have literally hundreds in my houses in chests that i can't sell because the merchants only have a thousand or two gold tops.

Oh, a long time ago, I added a mod that increased their gold. I got tired of having 200 sapphire necklaces.

There are mods for the merchant's amounts. However, I also use Console Commands, by adding more money to them. With "Oblivion" it was, click on merchant and "SetBarterGold 60000", because more than that causes glitches. With "Skyrim", click on merchant and then, "AddItem 0000000F 100,000". That should remedy your problems with selling items. ;-)
