Falmers are blind.
I never played a stealth much. I played a Battlemage, so everything was either in sword and shield or magic.

So when I first did, I found somewhat frustrating how many enemies have almost psychic like detection at lower levels. As I got higher and got muffled spell everything got much easier, but the moment an enemy rotates around and sees you, welp stealth broken.

I just sort of assumed every enemy had the similar AI of having a cone of vision in front where they instantly detected you. Of course I knew Falmers were blind from lore, but then until I....

....accidentally walked right in front of a Falmer and realized my stealth was not broken. No invisibility potion. I sneaked attacked him from the front!

Wow. I did not realize Bethesda went the extra mile. I just thought they just copy and paste the same AI to everything. Just something cool I should have realized a lot earlier I guess. Next time if I play a stealth character, I know Dwarven ruins is the best place to level up Sneak.

Ha, yes! Although I believe they have the stereotypical 'better hearing' to compensate' thing, i.e. in mechanical terms, if you're wearing heavy armour and don't have any enchants, spells or perks to muffle the noise, they'll detect you more easily than other NPCs from that (but still may struggle to work out exactly where you are as I think the 'line of sight' is a bit more important than 'in or out of earshot')

Yup, if you're super-sneaky, they won't detect you unless they bump into you. They do sometimes seem aware of a presence (scent?) but can't really pinpoint it.

Here is a good mod to make stealth better and more challenging it's the one i'm using.

Stealth Skills Rebalanced - Sneak - Lockpicking - Pickpocket
