Mod to download custom characters?
can you do that without it screwing up your save game?

Should be able to add new mods to an existing save without affecting it.

But dont change your character race.

look into the mod ECE or racemenu on the nexus. ece will work better for what you want. you will still need to download presets though after these

If you are wanting to play a character someone made. They will need to export the character data with an in-game command.
Then you will need to download the Creation Kit (it's in your Steam > Library > Tools), and import the character data into your game.
You will also need to install all the mods they used to make the character, or else it won't work.

Pre-made, as in an existing mod released to the public? Or a mod that you or someone you know has made, that you want to incorporate into your game? BIG difference.

but pre-sets are just that, you can use save games as well but they will be affected by the mods you currents have/dont have. or you can do it like jenifya said. either way you will need other mods to support your hot female needs. to the extent of my knowledge at leased.

just download a character savegame...
make sure you get the mods that this character "needs" to look good...

nexus->files->categories->saved games
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/searchresults/?src_cat=43

add the .sav file to documents/mygames/skyrim/saves
load the save ingame

you downlaod a completely different save game...
you will start from the point of that save game.

your other saves wont be affected by a different save.
you can always back up your saves, just in case...

Using a new face+race on your current savefile can be done but a load of work. Using an existing save will mean you loose your progress yes.

is it? some stats might be messed up but thats an easy fix. i have change my race multiple times in my playthoughs and havnt really had a problem. i dont think changing meshes affect your save-file at all do they?

Both meshes and textures are 100% fine. Changing race though might really cause some questscripts to break. Either by not being a normal vanilla race or having it labelled wrong, breaking the script.
