Civil War: choosing your side.
Is there a way not to choose between the two factions? (Imperials and Stormcloaks)
I don't want to support any of them, but I wan't to complete the Civil War quest and bring an end to the conflict, similar to how it was possible in New Vegas, to start you own independent faction and not have to side with the NCR or The Legion.

Also, if you did side with any of those factions, please tell me why you did, because I don't like any of them.

Yes. Don't start the Civil War quest. Once you start it, you are committed one way or the other.
Nope, not even sure if there are any mods to do it. I guess you could mess around with console commands to advance the stages of the quests but a/ it could well break your game and b/ you'd still be having one side win. If you don't pick a side then the war will essentially be in a stalemate type situation and nothing will really happen, so you could probably just pretend the war was finished (ignoring certain things people say, of course.) If you do the Main Quest without joining either side, then at one point you'll have to negotiate a temporary truce, you could, I suppose, pretend it was permanent, as I don't think there's any noticeable 'war starting up again' stuff.[/spoler]

Welp. That sucks. So far I've been very disapointed with the story choices in Skyrim.
So which side did you guys choose and why?
I played the questline exactly once during my first playthrough back when it was released. I can't remember who I sided with, but in the end it doesn't really matter. All that gets decided are the location of certain NPCs and the color of the town guard uniforms in certain cities.
You can ignore the civil war as long as you like... and you can then in advancing the main quest bring both sides to a meeting at High Hrothgar to discuss a truce !

The truce is only until you have defeated Alduin and small skimmishes keep going but neither have any effect on you!

You can leave it in the stalemate if you wish as the war doesn't start until you choose a side!
Personally I was disappointed in the civil war .... it is one of the very few quests where you can do a series of quest 2 ways but both are almost exactly the same!

Yeah the civil war and these decisions are worst quest designs in all skyrim IMO ...and I love Skyrim

I have played through skyrim lots of times and so I have played both ...but I definately relate to the stormcloaks more so than the Imperials! Although in saying that when I ended it with the Stormcloaks I felt betrayed by Ulfric !
At level 14, and since the Imperials put a contract on me, I'm going with the Stormcloaks.
