Followers sometimes don't attack glitch
You know the time when you're in battle, and there is an enemy just hitting your follower, and the follower has its weapons unsheated and acts like nothing is there, and is constantly getting hit? Yeah... where can I find a mod that fixes that?

the AI seems to not be responding it must be related to a script not working out have you try verifying your cache? if you have done so then use BOSS and TES V edit and maybe that could help

but there is really no mods out there that specifically helps followers have you also tried out downloading the unofficial patches

I have gotten the unofficial patches, all of them, yes. I will try out the other options you suggested. But, the glitch that I speak of has also happened to me many times on the xbox version of this game. Mostly in caves with draugr.

i see it looks like this is actually a spead out issue then i would google around and find a reiable site that can solve your issue you might just have to go back to an eariler save OR and i think you won't like it but delete your game save data, exit out the game verify cache and go back in
I know this is a necrobump, but I've had this problem and seem to have found a solution, and I thought I'd share it, since this thread appears in Google Search results. When Vilkas wasn't attacking, I initially tried to fix the problem by dismissing him and immediately asking Vilkas to follow me again, and that kind of worked, but he would only use his default Hunting Bow. It was only when I decided to move his equipment to another follower did I try something that fixed his behavior.

First, know that there is a glitch that asking a follower to pick up an item through the "I need your help" dialog can cause items to be marked as stolen--as seen on the UESP[www.uesp.net] wiki, under the Bugs section. A weapon can mistakenly get labeled as "stolen". A follower will gladly equip a "stolen" item but will refuse to attack with it (so it appears). I removed his weapons, laundered them, and gave them back to him so they were "clean". Afterwards, he'd attack enemies like normal.

This also seems to be the reason why Vilkas would be able to attack after being dismissed and asked to follow again; he got his bow back, which isn't stolen and could be used to attack.

I hope this solves some people's problems playing Skyrim in 2017. :)
