Migration of Elder Scrolls Online client

First apologies that this was not posted in the ESO forum - but I want to exhaust all of my options before buying twice. Once for Steam and once with Bethesda. I have been enjoying ESO since the early stages of the BETA. As a result I have many in game items that were gifts to players. I have tried to use my ESO key that came with the game in box, which was easily activated on the Bethesda Client, to activate on Steam. States that the key is invalid. If I have to set up a new client and purchase the game again - that means more monthly fees. Currently I am playing the game as a Non-Steam Game Add on.
I want to migrate files so Steam will recognize that I already have the game and become part of the discussion forums, earn badges etc. Again I do not want to loose all the perks of the first client. Thanks for any assistance.

Most of that forum has been locked, zenimax playing crafty type of thing going on.
